The PACE Foundation

The PACE Foundation The Pediatric Autoimmune neurologiCal rEsearch (PACE) Foundation, is a national non-profit patient organization dedicated to researching these disorders.

According to a recent CDC report, between 13%-20% of all school age children in the United States suffer from a mental disorder in a given year. Given that base, the experts at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) indicated that a significant portion of these mental disorders (approximately 20%) are caused by Pediatric Autoimmune Neurological Disorders. In other words, the number of scho

ol age children in the United States affected by these autoimmune neurological disorders is projected to be between 1.8 million to 2.9 million children. Searching for Solutions

Diseases that fall under the Pediatric Autoimmune Neurological Disorder syndrome include Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS), Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS), Sydenham’s Chorea and Autoimmune Encephalitis (AE). Individuals affected by Pediatric Autoimmune Neurological Disorders often find it difficult to receive proper diagnosis, treatment and specialized healthcare. The length of time between onset of symptoms and diagnosis can unfortunately take many years, but with early diagnosis and appropriate therapies, many patients diagnosed with a Pediatric Autoimmune Neurological Disorders can live healthy, productive and nearly symptom-free lives.

In an observational study, teens who took the antibiotic doxycycline, which is a common prescription for acne, had a reduced risk of developing schizophrenia. Because this is an observational study, we don't yet know the mechanism, but doxycycline can cross the blood-brain barrier (and affect the gut microbiome, as well), and has also previously been linked with better life outcomes for schizophrenia survivors. https://www.sciencealert.com/common-acne-medication-linked-with-30-lower-schizophrenia-risk

Antibiotic Doxycycline May Cut Schizophrenia Risk

New research suggests that the antibiotic doxycycline may have unexpected protective effects against schizophrenia.

Adolescents who received the drug were substantially less likely to develop the disorder later in life, possibly due to doxycycline’s influence on brain inflammation and development.

The study highlights inflammation as a key factor in schizophrenia risk and points to the potential of repurposing safe, existing drugs for prevention.

While the data are observational, the results open promising new directions for mental health research.

📣 BIG NEWS for the PANS/PANDAS Community!

While the data from the IVIG trial is under review, we are pleased that Octapharma has officially released a statement regarding findings accumulated during the IVIG trial. Although the journey isn't over, the news brings hope. 💙

✅ Children who received PANZYGA® showed overall improvement.

📊 While the primary treatment measurement showed improvement, it was just short of the threshold for “statistical significance.”

🎯 The secondary treatment measurement showed even greater improvement which did achieve “statistical significance.” 🙌

➡️ While the review process may take additional time before any decisions about the IVIG trial are finalized, the trial is a meaningful step forward for treatment options and recognition of these conditions.

Octapharma USA President Flemming Nielsen stated:"PANS is a very challenging disease for the medical community and families. Parents are confronted with the challenge of seeing their children afflicted with sudden-onset, debilitating, and difficult to treat OCD as well as other behavioral and cognitive issues. Octapharma looks forward to bringing relief to children and their families in the near future."

👏 Thank you to Octapharma, as well as the families, researchers, advocates, and dedicated medical professionals who helped make this trial possible.
