Kid in the Corner

Kid in the Corner Kid in the Corner is dedicated to shattering the stigma that surrounding mental health. We also will give you updates on what each project will be every month!

On June 13, 2017, we lost Zach Sumner to su***de - a heartbreaking tragedy that rocked us to our core. Over the following days and weeks, we heard dozens and dozens of stories from all corners about how Zach always looked out for and reached out to the “kid in the corner,” the kid who was alone and needed a friend. Zach touched more lives in his sixteen years than most people do in a lifetime. Zac

h was a giver who had a keen eye for those in need, but sadly his kindness was not reciprocated when Zach himself became a kid in the corner. We firmly believe that we can help change the story for other kids in the corner. We pledge to fulfill Zach’s legacy by continuing his efforts to reach every kid in the corner through education, awareness, kindness, and positivity. We will work to help every kid in the corner feel connected and supported by their community, and we pledge to help every kid in the corner find a path of hope and positivity. Feel free to contact any of our social media accounts for questions or on how to get involved!

We're incredibly proud to see our Program Manager, Brian Zuckerberg, featured by KOLD News 13's Tucson Now to discuss Kid in the Corner's growing impact in Southern Arizona.

In the interview, Brian shares how we're expanding our reach in Tucson and bringing life-saving mental health education, connection, and support to students, schools, and communities throughout the region.

As we continue to grow, our mission remains the same: ensuring every young person feels seen, heard, and supported.

PTSD isn't just a "veteran issue."

It can affect anyone who has experienced trauma.

Understanding the triggers, such as flashbacks, nightmares, avoidance, hypervigilance, and persistent negative emotions like guilt or shame, is the first step toward healing.

In the United States, men pass away due to mental health-related issues 3.85x more often than women, despite women reporting higher rates of depression (Source: AFSP, 2024).

Su***de is also the second leading cause of death for males aged 15–24. Despite this, young men are significantly less likely to access mental health services, often due to the socialized "stigma of weakness" (Source: CDC, 2023).

Let’s change the narrative. ❤️

Myth: Talking about mental health "puts the idea" in a child's head.

Fact: Asking directly and compassionately often provides a sense of relief and opens the door for help.

Myth: "The kid in the corner" is always the one sitting alone.

Fact: High-achieving, popular, and "loud" kids can also be struggling internally.

As we near the end of Mental Health Month, we want more than ever to stop the spread of misinformation about mental health and spread the truth that will help all of us shatter the stigma.
