On August 21, we celebrate the 109th anniversary of the birth of Sofia Cavalletti, and on August 23, we mark fifteen years since she returned home to the Bridegroom, the Good Shepherd whom she had served with such joy.
Sofia once shared that, with the simplicity and trust of a child, she had asked God for the grace to return the gift of her life in the same month in which it had been given to her. On August 23, 2011, just two days after her 94th birthday, that prayer was fulfilled.
As we remember Sofia’s birth and her return to the Father, we give thanks for her life, for her friendship with Gianna, for her extraordinary attentiveness to the child, and for her faithfulness to the gifts God placed in her care.
Her life was a gift, freely received and freely returned. And in the mystery of Christ’s love, that gift continues to bear fruit.
Thank you, Sofia. And thanks be to God, the giver of every good gift.
