Working with USDA Forest Service- Tonto National Forest & Northern Arizona University to identify and collect seeds from various native plants inside a forest research area. Caches of native plants such as these provide a bank that is unaffected by grazing animals and or human activity. Seeds are then grown out inside greenhouses at NAU, and transferred to project sites around the state. Native plants are crucial for stream restoration work, as they provide bank stability & shading for our watersheds. Once invasive plants are removed from the banks of a project site, native plants can be reintroduced to further insulate the area. Decades of overgrazing, fire, and human development have made native plants harder and harder to find and cultivate. Very thankful for the dedicated individuals who are helping us with this aspect of our project work! 🌱 🪴 🌲

Here in Arizona Trout Unlimited is working with the White Mountain Apache Tribe and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on an Aquatic Organism Passage (AOP) project on Paradise Creek. Currently, we are replacing three undersized and perched culverts that create barriers to Apache trout movement throughout the stream. The new culverts allow us to build the stream channel right under the road, creating pool and riffle habitat that allows any age class of Apache trout to pass through at any time of the year. This project will connect 9.3 miles of stream habitat.

Please Help Trout Unlimited Support the Lee’s Ferry fishery. (Find Links In Our Bio)

Lake Powell remains at historically low levels, and as a result the Colorado River below Glen Canyon Dam is warming rapidly. As of today, Lake Powell is sitting at 23% capacity, and water temperatures have increased to 67 degrees.

Releases from the dam are projected to continue to increase and approach 77 degrees this summer. If that occurs, the collapse of the Lees Ferry trout fishery is not a possibility, it is an expectation. These prolonged water temperatures will be too warm for trout and just right for bass populations which will decimate native fish populations downstream from Lee’s Ferry.

The Adaptive Management Work Group, Technical Work Group, and Planning and Implementation Group all recommended implementing the cool-water bypass. This would release super cool water from the dam and lower water temperatures, improving trout habitat and limiting the ability of Smallmouth bass to spawn in Lee’s Ferry.

The group had a great visit from AZGFD Commissioner Jim Goughnour & were invited to the Commission meeting that took place in Payson the same week.

We were also visited by the outstanding group “Be Kind People Project” who have an incredible message to our campers. https://thebekindpeopleproject.org

What an awesome year out on the water with our campers! We hope to see all of them out fishing with us from here on! Brand new advocates for Cold water conservation here in Arizona!

Checking in on our planted willows and sedges out at Dude Creek 🌱

They’re doing great! Awesome to see how much they have grown since November.

Just hitting them with some water and maintaining the cages a little bit.

Saw lots of native Gila swimming, some other locals, and brought a not so local straggler along 🐕
