AZTU was the recipient of approx 200 donated rods and reels. Bass Pro customers exchanged their used gear for gift cards to purchase new gear. This new partnership between AZTU and Bass Pro will allow more people to be exposed to the joys of fishing with their own gear. TU will inspect donated gear and give the refurbished rod and reel
combos to those who participate in future fishing events.
AZTU volunteers will also participate in Bass Pro sponsored events throughout the year. Conversely, Bass Pro will be a sponsor\partner in future TU events when possible.

We have partnered with a fly-fishing / conservation apparel brand called Native Instinct (Owned by a tribal member of the Navajo Nation) on an Apache Trout specific line of clothing. A portion of each item sold will go directly do our work being done at Paradise Creek, on the White Mountain Apache Reservation.

This specific project is removing and replacing dysfunctional culverts that have become barriers to fish connectivity in that stream!

AZTU spent “Free Fishing Day” with the White Mountain Apache Tribe. We were fortunate enough to help host their annual Youth Fishing Day for over 600 kids. Taught Casting, gave away lots of fly-rods, donated some awesome prizes (including a yeti cooler for biggest fish award) and helped the kids catch a bunch of fish! The WM Apache Tribe have been and continue to be an incredible partner in conservation. It’s an honor to be invited into the community and to have the opportunity to give back to it as much as we can.

One of our upcoming project sites is Boggy Creek
Our team along with our partners in the project had the chance to go walk the length of the intended work site during this creeks’s intermittent dry phases. The goal for this awesome place is to return the creek and meadow in which it sits to a perennial wet meadow with year round or close to it, surface water. Creating miles more habitat for Apache Trout.

AZ White Mountains Project Manager Kaitlin Martin -
“Trout Unlimited is working with partners at the U.S. Forest Service to complete watershed improvements in the Black River Watershed in Boggy Creek in three phases. Using locally sourced timber from adjacent hill slopes, volunteers, conservation crews, and staff members will be installing low-tech, process-based restoration structures within the stream channel to reconnect the stream to its floodplain and re-establish wet meadow habitat in the drainage. For phase 2, TU will install a temporary elk-exclusion pipe-rail fence to help riparian species recover, and Phase 3 will involve planting native woody and herbaceous riparian species along the stream corridor to accelerate restoration efforts.”

As teachers seek ways to keep students engaged in learning, a 30-year-old program offers one solution: raising tanks of trout right in the classroom. May say it's a perfect blend of hands-on science and fun.

During the recent TU Southwest Retreat, staff from various states had the chance to check out our Thompson - B***o Meadow project. The improvement even from this March (see last Thompson Meadow post) is incredible! Water quality and availability has gone up so much in stream, even during this continued lack of rain. Learn more about the progress being made from our White Mountains Project Manager Kaitlin Martin…

“The instream work at Thompson-B***o meadow is complete, and we are seeing a dramatic increase in available water in the meadow, a decrease in silt within the stream channel, and variable development of stream habitat, including deep pools and riffles. TU’s contractor is currently working on installing a pipe-rail elk exclusion fence around the meadow to help ease grazing pressure and to let the riparian vegetation recover. We are also working with scientists from NAU to develop a riparian planting plan for the meadow to boost woody and herbaceous diversity and provide better shading to reduce in-stream temperatures.“
