BETHEL, AK- Today is our return home day! We truly feel like we have come to know Bethel and we're a part of their community. As we waited for our flight that was delayed by the rapidly changing weather around them--- four hours turned to a reunion and a continued witness. Then a man came up to Nick and said "I see your reading the Bible. We used to see that all over Bethel in days past. He told how a "Gossika" (outsider) from Yuma, AZ, had learned I had dropped out of school....he talked to me about an education. He helped me all the way. I became a Christian and educator in the villages with the same mission. His first time to Arizona was to go thank this man in person. He is Nelson Alexie, and he shared fondly of Billy Graham sharing the verse that saved Him, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou wilt be saved." Acts 16:31 So we praise the Lord for all our "fruitful" times and talks, 2,500 tracts later, 100 books of Hope Response to Loss, Pain and Grief, 200 devotionals on Life's Challenges, and 200 "Forward in Faith". All for His glory and with the obedient partnership of all those supporting us anf praying. We especially thank the "Hope Responders" of Bethel Evangelical Covenant Church for all they did to come alongside us as co-workers in the Lord!

BETHEL, AK- The Typhoon was the disaster that brought us but the loss, pain and grief goes much deeper here. Bethel is a hub for 56 Yupik and Cupik villages and they are over 70% of the population. It is very isolated and difficult. Our time was spent with those on the frontlines of this pain--the Alaska State Troopers! They shared that the majority of their responses were to sexual assault, su***de, violent crimes, and deaths involving alcohol and paint sniffing--all in that order. That led us to meet with those running correctional facilities, treatment programs, refuges, prematernal care, and emergency foster persons. It was heart breaking to realize the intensity of devastation. We have been to and ministered in many reservations in Arizona and the "Lower 48" as is referred to yet it is the isolation that is intense. The state trooper shared how the majority of sexual assaults were ignored by family with strong refusal for help and that su***des were mostly in the spring because of feeling even more trapped. Centers were short-staffed and often the services like classes not taken advantage of because they felt it made no difference. A "spirit of apathy" and depression is widespread. Please pray for hope and for the deliverance that the only Jesus can bring! Pray hearts are broken for "the least of these" and that there crises up, a cry to God for help! Romans 5:8 "But God demonstrates His love for us while we were yet sinners!" A Hope Response loves the that need Him.

BETHEL, AK- We spent the day with educators who have full Yupik immersion programs and holidays that center around their important cultural subsistence hunting and gathering. Kids even dress and process beavers and moose in the school as part of their continuing education. A Christian FEMA worker came to our trainings and said "I want to be a Hope Responder" on my off-hours time. Then we heard the story of a long time missionary turned pastor. He flew from village to village in days past doing children's Bible Clubs, day camps, and VBS's which drew the parents to Christ also. We even had a request for a Hope Response personal visit by one who had lost loved ones from murder and su***de as well as dealing with domestic violence and addiction. We shared and prayed as her spirit was so longing for deliverance. The Bible shows the cry of each of these hearts in Psalm 71:2 "In your righteousness, rescue me and deliver me; turn your ear to me and save me". Pray for the harvest of the many faithful throughout these communities for a Hope Response to be witnessed.

BETHEL, AK- A Sunday Lord's Day was spent first with Bethel Evangelical Covenant Church! It was heartfelt worship followed by a "Children's Moment" with us doing the puppets on what H.O.P.E stood for in facing the hard things like the typhoon, or a death or bullying. H for Get H.elp, O for Get O.pen, P for Get P.raying, and E for Get E.ncouraged! Nick shared a sermon on "Sharing Christ in Our Loss, Pain and Grief" based on 2 Corinthians 1:3,4 "“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” We then shared testimonies and the tract to know how to share the Gospel with the questions we often face. (Service was shared in a separate post for you.) Then the Lord took us to the final day of the Yupik Gathering of all their villages for a Gospel Festivale. They urged us to SING and share which we did "Because He Lives." The message by Willis Phillips was so good on the Father God and how His Son Jesus wanted his followers to know "I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you" found in John 14:18. He then in a quiet yet moving way described how an orphan feels yet how Jesus fulfilled this in His promised Holy Spirit. We met Roy Alexie at the craft fair the day before and learned he was a lay pastor but today we heard his wife sing her own written song "Beautiful Land" as she was also a translator of the Bible into the Yugtan language. A holy event! We then finished up with a home Bible study and rich old hymns singing with fun fellowship! Sometimes words cannot describe the feelings that these bring to each other, a true Hope Response of encouragement!

BETHEL, AK - Once again, we are humbled by how God turned the day to a truly Yupik way of communicating the Bible's Hope Response to Loss, Pain and Grief... in song! It began with the Lord having one come to the door with one simple statement, "I'm hungry!" We brought him in and fed him, sat with him, visited with him. We saw him thank God for just the water he drink and again for the meal. We asked where he lived? In the woods and began to tell of his bed under the stars, the bed of dry grass and the smell of the Tundra herbs, that even the angel of the Lord sat with him at times. We asked don't you have family? He began to sing every Christian song that we knew from his family and we joined him. We asked if he had a Bible? He pointed to his heart and began reciting verse after verse. We felt we were visited by an angel. We asked if he wanted to go to the gathering of all the Yupik villages this weekend at the Bethel Moravian Church's Gospel Festivale. He excitedly joined us. We heard songs of lamentation, songs of thanks and praise, on God's glorious Plan of Salvation and even of the storm. Expert musicians played the piano, drums, electric violin, harmonica, electric and acoustic and bass guitars, a ukulele and lovely Yupik voices of all ages. Then Pastors Alexie and Pastor Jimmie spoke on truths from God's Words with great gentleness, compassion, and deep soul ministry that was unlike what we've heard before. Our new friend hugged us and trotted joyfully out the door. Evacuees from Kwigillingok and Kipnuk met and talked with them. It was our Matthew 25:37-40. A Hope Response trusts in a God who revealed Himself in Jesus.

BETHEL, AK - The Lord is so amazing and so personal! Prayers were lifted up in appeal to Jesus to calm the storm that was projected to worsen and he cleared the sky to not a cloud in sight. Posters and personal invites were made all over Bethel to come to the Feast and family gathering like their "Messenger Feasts" of long ago days in the villages. I got to cook my first "Moose Shepherd's Pie" and a fresh "Blueberry Cobbler." The first woman to arrive was from Kipnuk and as she shared pictures on her phone of their experience. Lo and behold I was viewing on her phone one of the very pictures used in our track. She was so blessed for part of her story to be able to reach many of her people for Christ. Yet to all of our surprise none others came. Then a couple walked in the door and were shocked that the feast was ready but none others came. She was 6 months pregnant but they still ran out and began to tell all they could to come. Yes, it was the homeless from many villages. We shared the tract and our testimonies while they ate. They were focused, reacting, and you could feel the Holy Spirit in the filled room. We sang
"Silent Night" as one family sang the night of the Typhoon and they joined in and sang it in Yupik. If you know your Bible, this may remind of a parable Jesus himself told in Matthew 22. "Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying: 2 “The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son. 3 He sent his servants to those who had been invited to the banquet to tell them to come, but they refused to come...(none came) So he said go to the street corners and invite to the banquet anyone you find.’ 10 So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the people they could find, the bad as well as the good, and the wedding hall was filled with guests." A Hope Response is an invitation to all but who will come to Jesus.

BETHEL, AK - We have been so blessed by our host church Bethel Evangelical Covenant Church and they worked very hard before our coming to get the word out about the "Week of Hope." They did a "Becoming a Hope Responder in Crisis" training with us last night. They encouraged us to personally go out today and yesterday to invite people to the Family Gathering Friday night! We need you to pray for who God brings. All the churches participate together for such activities as Awana or take turns with "Supper Club" and invite one another to Gospel outreaches and training workshops like ours. But Bethel has been VERY busy with a big council of the Village Presidents, the start of school and add to that an incredible storm that rolled in yesterday with constant rain and high winds...all expected to increase in severity tomorrow. We also visited the hospital and it's hostel sharing the tracts. 2 Corinthians 9:6 in the Bible: "Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously." Pray for the seed sown to reap a harvest-- a true Hope Response!

Wait to hear God's faithfulness of a Yupik father to his Yupik son to return as a follower of Jesus in Bethel, AK. You will be inspired.

BETHEL, AK - God confirmed our coming to Bethel even as we sat in the airport gate awaiting our flight! A Yupik woman with delight said "I think I know you but don't know how I know you." We shared how we taught the Bible's Hope in times of loss, pain and grief. "She then began to share how she lost all her family to a plane crash and how angry she was at the Alaskan Trooper for telling her. Then lost her husband too. But, she said Jesus appeared to her each time, why?" Then we we flew over the villages to the hub village of Bethel! We were greeted by Alyssa Perry a Christian medical professional, with our host church Bethel Evangelical Covenant Church. We shopped at the local grocery and when getting food were asked "where are you from?" It led to a very personal and open account of the loss of Kwigillingok after Typhoon Halong with tears and a "Thank you for coming." Our evening was spent in their AWANA with the Hope Response puppets! The kids felt for their loss and told how some of their teachers had shared about their loss too. The AWANA Yupik teacher said that their brother was just so happy to be alive! The time closed with an A.A. Open Meeting in the church that we got to be a part of. "Let the redeemed of the Lord say so." Psalm 107:2
