📚✨ From the Archives: A Conversation with TAP’s Founder ✨📚

Some conversations stand the test of time.

In this special From the Archives feature, TAP Founder Kathy Dowd, AuD, reflects on the inspiration behind The Audiology Project, the connection between diabetes and hearing loss, and why comprehensive hearing healthcare extends far beyond a simple hearing screening. The discussion highlights TAP’s ongoing mission to connect hearing and balance health with chronic disease care and educate both patients and healthcare professionals about the importance of audiology’s role in whole-person health.

As we continue to grow and expand our impact in 2026, it’s inspiring to revisit the conversations that helped shape TAP’s vision and remind us why interdisciplinary collaboration and patient-centered care remain at the heart of what we do.

Whether you’re new to TAP or have been following our journey for years, this archived interview offers valuable insight into our roots and the work that continues to drive us forward.

As we continue to remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. At The Audiology Project, we also recognize the important role audiologists play in supporting veterans and active-duty service members affected by hearing loss, tinnitus, and balance disorders related to military service.

From combat noise exposure to traumatic brain injuries, hearing health is a critical part of overall well-being and quality of life for those who have served. This Memorial Day, we reflect with gratitude, compassion, and respect for the sacrifices made by military families across generations. 🇺🇸

As we spend time with loved ones this weekend, let’s also remember the importance of protecting our hearing and advocating for accessible hearing healthcare for all.

The Audiology Project is excited to introduce a new home for TAP Special Projects 💙

As TAP continues to grow, so does our commitment to connecting hearing and balance healthcare with chronic disease care, public health, research, advocacy, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Through these partnerships, audiology is reaching spaces it has historically been overlooked in and becoming a valued voice in broader healthcare conversations.

Our new TAP Special Projects initiative highlights collaborations and opportunities that support patient care, research innovation, accessibility, education, and community outreach at local, national, and international levels.

From expanding audiologic services in skilled nursing and assisted living facilities, to collaborating with organizations like CEDER and the Diabetes Management Collaborative, these projects reflect TAP’s mission to improve quality of life through connection, advocacy, and innovation.

We are incredibly excited for what’s ahead and grateful to everyone helping move these initiatives forward.

A little TAP throwback ✨

While digging through some of Dr. Kathy Dowd’s early advocacy and educational resources, we came across this Audiology Corner Chats video and couldn’t help but reflect on how far TAP has come. From the early days of building educational materials to now expanding our volunteer resources, training opportunities, and advocacy initiatives, it’s inspiring to see the growth of this community and mission over the years.

Dr. Dowd’s vision for making advocacy approachable and actionable continues to shape the work we do today. As we continue expanding into broader chronic disease education and interprofessional advocacy, we are so excited for what’s ahead.

And with that growth, we are thrilled to officially welcome Dr. Jennifer Gehlen, AuD as TAP’s new Director of Advocacy! 🎉 Her background in education, clinical training, tinnitus care, and outreach will help strengthen TAP’s advocacy efforts at the local, state, and national levels. We are so excited to have her leadership, passion, and experience guiding this next chapter.

Here’s to honoring where TAP started while continuing to build where we’re going 💙🧡
