Detour Company Theatre

Detour Company Theatre At Detour, we rehearse and produce theatre productions starring adults with disabilities. We are holding auditions for our Fall 2026 season August 20th, 2026!

Our Fall shows are:
+ The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
+ The Rocky Horror Show
+ Newsies Jr Detour Company Theatre provides theater training and performance experiences for adults with intellectual, developmental and physical disabilities, giving them authentic opportunities to develop artistry, demonstrate courage and collaboration, experience joy and participate in the sharing of musical th

eater with the entire community. These adults may have disabilities including (but not limited to) autism, developmental and physical challenges, deafness and blindness, which require additional support and adaptive techniques. We work to create rewarding programming that supports existing skills and celebrates the development of new ones. We also serve as a resource to the community--both to support those who want to work in the field of arts and disability, and to those who are eager to celebrate the talent, creativity and artistic potential of all people.

Detour has three shows to audition for tomorrow (solo auditions) and next week on Thursday (group auditions). Today we are sharing some information about each of the shows!

Rocky Horror is a comedy. A rock and roll sci-fi musical about a straight laced couple, Brad and Janet, who come upon a castle of, well, s*xy q***r aliens. Headed by a Dr. Frankenstein character who is building the perfect man to love ("Rocky").

Rocky Horror has mature content related to s*x and s*xuality. We are not planning to do a "High School" version of this show. But we are looking make our own "Detour Version" of this show--to talk as a cast to make sure everyone feels comfortable and make adjustments as needed to staging and costumes. This is a show about being comfortable with who you are and it is very important to us that our cast feel comfortable with how we are presenting this show.

Rocky Horror is a solid example of "q***r theatre" which includes theatre that rejects simple labels for people and uses campy staging and storylines to point out the absurdity of things like gender roles.

Things to consider about this show
- S*x and s*xuality. These are central themes of the show. Moments will not go past the point of someone's comfort level at any time (s*xiness can be implied without needing to include touch or the appearance of on stage intimacy), but these themes can't be erased from the show entirely. Are you interested in being in a show that explores those themes in a safe and supported way?

- Weekly schedule. Rocky Horror has rehearsals on Thursdays in September, and then Wednesdays for the rest of the rehearsal calendar. All from 4-6pm.

- Full calendar. Rocky Horror runs directly alongside Newsies--also performing in January at Scottsdale Center on the 8th and 9th.

Detour has three shows to audition for tomorrow (solo auditions) and next week on Thursday (group auditions). Today we are sharing some information about each of the shows!

Newsies is a show that Detour has done in the past--we are excited to be "looking back" at it this fall!

Newsies is the story of a group of children who worked in New York City selling newspapers on the street to pedestrians. The people who ran the newspapers were not treating them fairly, so they went on a labor strike--they refused to work and sell papers until their demands were met.

This is a story of solidarity, fighting for what's right, and taking on unfair bosses. It's a story of revolution (which connects with our spring show--Les Mis!)

Things to consider about this show
- Weekly schedule. This show meets on Thursdays, from 4-6pm for full cast rehearsals.

- Full calendar. This show will rehearse all the way until January 8th, 9th, and 10th and will perform at Scottsdale Center on the 9th and 10th of January.

- Children's crusade. This show has a cast of characters that are mostly kids. We think that in this particular instance, this is not an undignifying role for adults to play. But we want to make sure you go into this show knowing that most of the characters involved are kids (though they will be played by adults).

WHAT WE NEED TO KNOW AT AUDITIONS: Are you open to being cast in Newsies?

Both auditions, solo and group, are happening at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 2310 N 56th Street, Phoenix, AZ 85008. Please come prepared to sing a short song, do a dance or movement, or offer a monologue. Auditions are a chance to demonstrate courage!

If you'd like to be in a show, but can't make it to one or both of the audition dates, please reach out to our Executive Director (Simon Ridley) over email at [email protected] to make other arrangements!

Detour has three shows to audition for tomorrow (solo auditions) and next week on Thursday (group auditions). Today we are sharing some information about each of the shows!

Based on the classic novel by C.S. Lewis, this is a non-musical play of The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. This is a story of magic, fighting for what is right, and overcoming evil through solidarity. It is important to note that this story has significance that goes beyond the obvious for many who are Christian. But this is also a story that is open and accessible to everyone.

Four siblings go on a magical journey through an enchanted wardrobe into the land of Narnia and work together with the inhabitants there to overcome an endless winter and the evil queen who has ruled over it.

This show is not a musical! This is a "straight play" meaning it's a show without musical numbers. It will include fight scenes, lots of lines and acting, and an intimate audience space. This show will be performed at St. Stephen's in November as a studio production.

Things to consider about this show
- Weekly schedule. We are looking for a small dedicated cast who can meet on Mondays from 3-5pm (small group rehearsals will be on Tuesdays from 3-5pm)
- Full calendar. This show concludes the weekend before Thanksgiving. This might be a great fit for you because of that, or it might not be as many rehearsals as you would like to have!
- Non-musical. This is a show without singing and dancing. That might be something really exciting to you, or a reason to do a different show if you're interested in singing and dancing.
