Table Sponsors Rick & Katy Nieves believe in the mission of Freedom for Heroes because of their deep family ties to military service.

We are grateful for your support of the mission, and for your service, Rick. Thanks to you we're able to help 45 more veterans this year be empowered to heal as Veterans.

Community cures su***de. And you're helping us build that community every day.

On the morning of June 6, 1944, five naval assault divisions stormed the beaches of Normandy. Seven thousand ships and landing craft operated by more than 195,000 naval personnel from 8 countries brought almost 133,000 troops to beaches -- 73,000 American soldiers -- given the code names UTAH, OMAHA, GOLD, JUNO, and SWORD.

By the end of the day, more than 10,000 Allied troops were wounded or killed, but the Allies had established a foothold in France that would permit them to flood troops, vehicles, and supplies into Europe.

When FDR held a press conference later that day, his comment to the cheerful reporters highlighted the extraordinary weight of the past 24 hours. “I knew last night, when I was doing that broadcast on Rome,” he told them, “that the troops were actually in the vessels, on the way across.”

Remembering all of the heroes who fought that day. And although the living Veterans are few, we salute you.

We were lucky enough to have Michael Durant, POW, Black Hawk Pilot, and the inspiration for the movie Black Hawk Down, as the keynote speaker for our Freedom for Heroes Gala, presented by Vet Life Coverage.

Mike gave an inspiring talk about overcoming unthinkable adversity, teamwork, community, and the intense training it takes just to survive during combat.

We're grateful that Mike belived enough in our mission to share his story with attendees. Thank you for your service, Mr. Durant.

Somewhere between tightening bolts and tuning engines, this group has found something many veterans search for after service: purpose, connection, and a shared mission once again.

Why does being called a hero make service members uneasy and often times an awkward situation?
