Ongoing training matters at Power Paws. Service dog training does not stop once a dog is placed with a client. Regular check-ins with Power Paws trainers and continued training help service dog providers:

- Reinforce good habits
- Address behavior or training issues early
- Evaluate public-behavior standards, and
- Keep each dog’s obedience and task skills strong.

Service dogs are not required to wear a vest. What matters is that the dog has been individually trained to support a person with a disability. At Power Paws, service dogs may assist with PTSD, Type 1 diabetes, mobility challenges, or facility-based support.

As tempting as it may be to greet a dog, it is important to remember that service dogs are working. The following guidelines apply to all dogs, with special consideration for service dog teams.

Do
-Speak to the handler, not the dog.
-Ask before petting; some teams may allow it.
-Give the service dog team enough space to move safely.
-Let the handler know if the dog is in the way.
-Compliment the handler on a beautiful or exceptionally well-trained dog.

Don’t
-Do not speak to or pet the dog without permission.
-Do not make distracting noises to get the dog’s attention.
-Do not stare into the dog’s eyes.
-Do not feed the dog.
-Do not ask about the handler’s disability.

Power Paws has moved location three times since its inception in 2001, with each move teaching us about our organization and client’s needs and each location an improvement on the last.

After starting off in the home of our founders, the Abels family, we moved to renovated
classrooms on the grounds of Apache Park in Scottsdale (Images 1-2). Even though the space supported Power Paws’ early growth, the facility was expensive, in poor repair, and did not provide the accessible accommodations clients needed.

Our next move came in 2017 when we moved to a more accessible facility on Rose Lane in North Scottsdale (Image 3). While there was a marked improvement in terms of space and cost, it also presented a challenge in that it was isolated from the clients we serve.

Our final move was in 2023, to our current home at Ability360 (Image 4). The campus is designed to help people with disabilities and their families, with a 15,000-square-foot resource center and 45,000-square-foot sports and fitness center specially equipped for people with disabilities.

This past Friday, July 17, Power Paws’ was paid a visit by members of the Order of the Eastern Star, who came to learn about our programs and tour the Ability 360 campus. The partnership between Power Paws and the Order of the Eastern Star began in 2021, when the order’s Yuma chapter began sponsoring grants for the organization. This partnership grew two years ago with Power Paws’ designation as the order’s Statewide Service Dog project.
