About the Program:
Associations compete. They compete for members, employees, volunteers, and sponsors. They compete with one another, with businesses, with government, or all three. To survive and thrive, they need a competitive strategy. One way to compete is to be different in a way that causes members (or employees, or volunteers, or sponsors) to prefer you to your competitors. As compared to your competitors, you can do something unique, do something uniquely well, or both. Innovation methods help you find ways to be unique. Creative problem-solving methods help you find ways to do something uniquely well.
In this talk, Kevin Holt will explain a five-step process for creating a differentiation strategy: 1) use segmentation to identify the target of your strategy, 2) do workshops and research to understand your existing strategy (you have one, whether you know it or not), then map it on the “as is” strategy canvas, 3) use innovation and creative problem-solving methods to devise your new strategy, then map it on the “to be” strategy canvas, 4) create a value proposition that highlights the key benefit imparted by your differentiators, and 5) design the activity system that will implement your strategy.

Our electronic devices are amazing. But that’s the problem – they’re too amazing. We can’t remove our eyes from our screens. We now, on average, spend 2 hours and 51 minutes on our phones per day. Collectively, over the course of one year, this equates to 43 days - the equivalent of forfeiting all of July and half of August to what mostly amounts to heedless distraction. Couple in time spent on iPads and home computers and we’re spending the majority of our days connected to screens. Consequently, instead of doing we’re viewing, being reactive rather than proactive, devoting as much time, if not more, to the unimportant - web surfing, social media scrolling, video watching – as we do to the important – family, goals, careers. All the more reason to incorporate some manner of digital balance into our days so that we, not our devices, are controlling our attentions. Jeff’s presentation, through his own unlikely screen-struggle story (unlikely due to a very outdoor-oriented lifestyle), helps achieve this by raising awareness to what we’re up against in today’s screen dominated world.
