“Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve.” —Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Today, we join the nation in honoring the life, vision, and enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This important day is not only a time for reflection—it is also a National Day of Service, calling us to turn remembrance into action. DAR members proudly answer that call today and throughout the year.

From mentoring youth and organizing food drives to beautifying communities and lending a helping hand, every act of service strengthens neighborhoods, empowers individuals, and builds unity. Together, our service creates ripples of positive change. Honoring Dr. King’s legacy through service today and every day. MLK Day reminds us that meaningful change begins when we serve our communities with purpose and unity.

DAR Scholarship application portal opened on November 1 for the 2026 award year! These scholarships are offered by the DAR Scholarship and American Indians Committees. The online application portal, DAR AcademicWorks, will remain open until January 31, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. (Hawaii Time).

2023 DAR Good Citizen Winner for Grand Canyon Chapter, NSDAR Scottsdale, Arizona

The DAR Good Citizens program and Scholarship Contest is intended to encourage and reward the sparkling qualities of good citizenship in our students. The program is open to all high school seniors enrolled in public or private schools accredited and in good standing with their state board of education. Students are not required to be United States citizens.

The student selected as the school’s DAR Good Citizen must have the following qualities:

Dependability (truthfulness, honesty, punctuality, etc.)
Service (cooperation, helpfulness, responsibility, etc.)
Leadership (personality, self-control, initiative, etc.)
Patriotism (unselfish loyalty to American ideals)

Pictured is the Scottsdale Police K9 Memorial Marker in front of our Witzeman Public Safety building that was first donated and dedicated in 2012 by the Grand Canyon Chapter, NSDAR Scottsdale, Arizona. In March of this year, we celebrated the 10th anniversary of the marker with a lovely rededication ceremony. The memorial serves as a daily reminder of the special, canine members of our department.

On this day in 1783, the Revolutionary War officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. The U.S. sent representatives to Paris, France to negotiate the treaty including Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and John Jay. This fascinating incomplete painting by Benjamin West from 1783 features the members of the American delegation. The other side was intended to depict the British delegation, but its representatives refused to pose, having no desire to commemorate their defeat. It is now in the collection of the Winterthur Museum in Delaware.
