DAR National Headquarters and our historic DAR Constitution Hall are excited to welcome the 2026 Scripps National Spelling Bee May 26–29 as its new host venue. The building is already abuzz as talented spellers from across the country and around the world prepare to compete on our historic stage.

As DAR Constitution Hall hosts this nationally televised event and related Bee Week invitation-only activities, DAR National Headquarters, including the DAR Museum and DAR Library, will be closed to the public during this time.

Follow along and watch the Scripps National Spelling Bee competition from the stage of DAR Constitution Hall! Find how to watch here: https://spellingbee.com/watch

This May, DAR is honored to celebrate National Historic Preservation Month. Historic preservation is a cornerstone of DARs mission and a vital part of preserving America’s story. Across the country, DAR members work year-round to restore historic sites, preserve archival treasures, and ensure the legacy of our Founding generation endures for future generations.

We are excited to spotlight a recent project to stabilize and restore an original 1819 Binns engraving of the Declaration of Independence for display in the DAR Museum’s latest exhibition, Revolution in Their Words. There’s a lot of talk about the Founding Fathers of the U.S. as we celebrate the nation’s 250th birthday, but what about the Founding Mothers? One name that should be considered for this title is Mary Katharine Goddard, an accomplished printer and publisher whose name appears on the second printing of the Declaration of Independence.

In January of 1777, after fleeing Philadelphia for Baltimore, the Continental Congress commissioned Goddard to print a second issue of the Declaration of Independence. This time, those who signed the Declaration in July of 1776 reasserted their commitment to the cause of Independence by allowing their names to be printed on the broadside. Mary Katharine Goddard put her name in print, too.

Printing this document was an act of treason. By printing this broadside and including her name, Mary Katharine Goddard was bravely aligning herself with the same risks that the signers had undertaken.

There are only 11 known surviving copies of the Goddard broadside, making it a very special treasure in the Library's collections.

For most of American history, the title "First Lady" has been used for the President's wife. But did you know that on occasion, a female relative of the POTUS has been asked to step into the role of White House hostess?

Margaret Wilson, born to Woodrow and Ellen Wilson on this day in 1886, assumed the responsibilities of White House social hostess after the death of her mother in 1914. She would continue as acting First Lady until her father remarried the following year.
