International Wild Waterfowl Association An international corps of conservationists committed to the protection and conservation of wild waterfowl. Become a member today! Dillon Ripley, Mr.

The International Wild Waterfowl Association (IWWA) was established in 1958 by a group of farsighted aviculturists, conservationists, and ornithologists. Conservation pioneers - Dr. Jean DeLacour, Dr. S. Randall Maybey, Dr. George Allen, and Sir Peter Scott - launched IWWA's early efforts to preserve the whooping crane (Grus americana) and trumpeter swan (Cygnus buccinator). Currently, one-third o

f all wild waterfowl are considered threatened or endangered. Habitat loss and human population growth are the primary causes of waterfowl declines, and these factors are growing annually. Today, the IWWA is a group of private aviculturists, students, researchers, conservationists, educators, zoo professionals, and waterfowl enthusiasts from around the world working to preserve all 234 taxa of wild waterfowl, and with your help in meeting the challenge, much can be done.

The International Wild Waterfowl Association’s Internship Funding Program offers financial support to help eligible students offset travel and accommodation costs associated with approved learning opportunities in waterfowl and wetland-related fields. If you are between the ages of 18 and 29 and are currently enrolled, preparing to begin your studies, or have graduated within the past six months, this is a great opportunity to gain valuable experience while advancing your career goals in conservation. The application deadline is approaching quickly on June 15, 2026!

IWWA Award for Prague Zoo's Bird Team

On May 23, the IWWA's Rodney Dawson Memorial Award was given to Antonín Vaidl, Curator of Birds at Prague Zoo, and the zoo's birdkeepers.

The team received this award in recognition of their incredible work for safeguarding the Brazilian merganser (Mergus octosetaceus) in aviculture, especially for the achievement of breeding this species at the Prague Zoo.

The history of Brazilian mergansers in Prague Zoo is a landmark success story in global bird conservation. As one of the rarest ducks on Earth (with fewer than 250 individuals in the wild), they were first brought to Prague as part of a crucial international effort to build a safe, ex-situ population.

The Brazilian merganser is critically endangered due to human-driven habitat destruction, including deforestation, hydroelectric dam construction, mining, and agricultural runoff that causes heavy water pollution and siltation. Given their small numbers, these mergansers act as a sensitive bioindicator of pristine water quality in the wetlands.

Unlike typical ducks that prefer standing lakes or deep waters, the Brazilian merganser requires very specific, fast-flowing, and crystal-clear wetland environments.

The Rodney Dawson Memorial Award is a prestigious award presented annually by the International Wild Waterfowl Association (IWWA). The award was established to honour individuals who make an exceptional contribution to the conservation and successful breeding of wild waterfowl.

The award was presented by Jan Harteman, one of IWWA's board members.

What a century, what a lasting legacy. 🌍

How do you write a post about a man who’s made such a lasting impact on conservation and how the world views wildlife? It almost feels impossible, but here we go.

Today we join the rest of the world in wishing a happy 100th birthday to Sir David Attenborough. 🎊
WWT is incredibly lucky to have had Sir David’s support over the years, from opening some of our wetland centres, to the close relationship he had with our founder, Sir Peter Scott. Thank you for being the voice of wildlife and helping show people that even the smallest ponds are filled with wonder. 🌿
