As we start another season of 5th grade Cub Scouts crossing into Scout Troops - remember the "why". Yes, it gets them away from screen time and into the outdoors, but it also teaches our youth how to navigate the real life challenges they will encounter throughout their lives. No other program offers this personal growth, learning, leadership and comradery all in one. How many times have you heard someone ask, “Why don’t they teach us about money in school?” If you’re in Scouting, you get several chances to learn and practice wise spending habits… something we call being “Thrifty.”

For instance, P.297 of the Scouts BSA Handbook covers an important part of meal planning for a campout: grocery shopping! Specifically, how can you decide what the best prices are for food and other items you need to plan your camp menu? The cooking chapter of the handbook helps introduce the idea of unit pricing and how it can help you discover the best value for your money.

Troop 104 just had a crew return from Philmont Scout Ranch - the pinnacle of scouting! The Scouting America program challenges and helps scouts grow, whether it's weekend camping, merit badges or a 12 day back country trek, the possibilities are limitless.

Note: This is the way back down after our ascent to 12,441' above sea level at Mt. Baldy

What, are your kids not using cast iron pans at home?

They will on our monthly camping trips! Our troop is scout led, we camp every month and our scouts do all the menu planning, shopping and cooking for each trip. Check into scouting to get them off the screens and into adventure!
