January Nor’easter Advisory #4

Good afternoon,

All planning and emergency management coordination is in place for this major storm event. We hope those along our immediate coastline were able to find a hotel or alternate living accommodations. For those who have not, and are still considering this, you may have time to reach out to a hotel or friend. We want to inform you we have learned that a regional shelter will be available at the Weymouth High School located at 1 Wildcat Way in South Weymouth. It opens at 7am Saturday morning.

Please click “I am Evacuating” link if leaving your coastal home for the storm.

This storm will be challenging for all, especially our senior citizens. Please reach out to your friends and neighbors that are seniors to make sure they have what they need to get through this storm. It would be helpful to check in with them periodically. If there are seniors that do not have anyone they feel they can ask please reach out to Scituate Public Safety at 781-545-5515 or 781-545-1212 and we will help find you some assistance.

We plan on opening our Senior Center on Sunday as a warming and charging station at noon. If anyone is in need of transportation please call the numbers above.

Again, we encourage everyone who has not done so to sign up for “CODE RED”. Any essential emergency information will be sent through this app. Please include both your home and cell numbers and include the texting option.

A couple additional safety tips for blizzard like conditions. If you have a heating system with a vent on the side of your home please make sure the vent is clear of any snow drifts. If blocked, it could create a dangerous carbon monoxide situation. Second, when safe please clear fire hydrants and drains in your neighborhood. 3’ clearance around the hydrant would be appreciated.

This is going to be a very strong and challenging storm but with common sense, patience, and trust in your Public Safety and Emergency Management Team we will get through this storm as we always do.

Be prepared and Stay Safe!

Nor’easter Advisory #3

SCITUATE EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY

January 28, 2022

January Nor’easter Advisory #3

Good afternoon,

We continue to monitor the Nor’easter that is forecast to impact our area with snow starting before midnight tonight and lasting through Saturday evening, snow fall could exceed 2’ with blizzard conditions through most of the day Saturday. With the heavy snow and potential blizzard conditions, travel will be extremely difficult so try to plan ahead by getting your errands and needs done by today. We are strongly encouraging everyone to stay home Saturday and Saturday night and allow our emergency management, public safety, and DPW workers to do our jobs.

The current forecast still calls for winds to be steady northeast 35-40mph with gusts that could exceed 60mph. If gusts exceed 60 mph expect tree and limb damage which would likely cause isolated to scattered power outages. If you see downed power lines please stay clear and call the Fire Dept. (911), National Grid for any power issues at 800-465-1212, and Eversource in Humarock at 800-286-2000.

We have been coordinating with all of our utility companies for emergency response and an efficient recovery. National Grid and Eversource are preparing for a type 3 event which could take up to 72 hours for full power restoration. Be prepared for power outages. See the attached emergency plan guideline for additional storm preparation guidance.

We anticipate some splash over with the 8am high tide Saturday and 9am Sunday tide but there is the potential for minor to moderate flooding with the 9pm high tide Saturday evening. Please move your vehicles from the flood prone areas by Friday evening.

EMERGENCY PARKING BAN

Effective Saturday, January 29th at 12:00 am through Sunday, January 30th, 2022 at 6:00 pm, an emergency parking ban will be in effect on all public roadways within the Town of Scituate to allow for the safe and efficient clearing of snow. Vehicles parked in temporarily prohibited locations may be towed, at their expense, under the direction of the Scituate Police Department.

Residents living in low lying areas or areas affected by the parking ban may temporarily relocate their personal vehicles for the duration of this emergency event to the following locations:

Barker Tavern Restaurant, 21 Barker Road
WPA Field House Lot in North Scituate, 7-19 Henry Turner Bailey Road
Humarock Public Beach Parking Lot, River St @ Harvard St.
Owners/operators relocating their vehicles at their own risk and should monitor storm conditions to ensure the safety of their vehicles.

Owners/operators should not relocate vehicles to the Cole Parkway Municipal Lot due to flooding concerns and to allow for Scituate DPW crews access for snow removal.

We continue to strongly encourage our waterfront coastal residents to consider relocating to a hotel or friend’s home for this storm. If evacuating please get this done tonight or at the latest by 6am Saturday, two hours before high tide. The local hotel list is included with the attached storm guideline. If evacuating, please click here: “I am Evacuating”. This gives emergency personnel vital information when called to an emergency or well being check. Please see the link below.

Please fuel your vehicles today and It would be wise to fuel and start your generators early and make sure you place them in a safe location to eliminate any exhaust getting into your home.

We held a successful sandbag distribution this morning at St. Mary’s parking lot. The Transfer Station will be closed on Saturday and Sunday, try to get there today if possible. All non-essential Town buildings will be closed over the weekend due to the elevated snow amounts and potential power issues.

We encourage everyone who has not done so to sign up for “CODE RED” on our Town Emergency website. Any essential emergency information will be sent through this app. Please include both your home and cell numbers and include the texting option.

This is going to be a very strong and challenging storm but with common sense and trust in your Public Safety and Emergency Management Team we will get through this storm as we always do.

Be prepared and Stay Safe!

SCITUATE EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY

Good afternoon,

We are closely monitoring the potential Nor’easter that is forecast to impact our area starting late Friday night and lasting through Saturday evening. This is going to be a long duration storm bringing strong northeast winds, heavy snow, and the potential for minor to moderate coastal flooding.

Heavy snow, with potential blizzard conditions, could exceed 12”-16” in our area with some mixing possible along the coast. If this does occur, travel will be extremely difficult so try to plan ahead by completing any tasks you have to do by Friday.

The current forecast calls for winds to be steady northeast 35-40 mph with gusts that could exceed 60 mph.

These winds will stir up our coastal waters bringing nearshore waves to 10’-15’ early in the day and may exceed 20’ later in the day as the storm strengthens. The coastal flood potential at the 8 AM (10.3’) and the 9 PM (8.6’) high tides will depend on the timing of the strongest winds with the potential for minor coastal flooding and moderate flooding in some of our low-lying areas. Currently the strongest winds are anticipated from 7 AM through 5 PM (daytime hours), if this timing comes earlier this could increase the flood potential.

With these moderately high astronomical tides and strong northeast winds, coastal homes should make their properties safe by securing outside equipment and boarding up windows and doors.

Coastal residents should also consider relocating to a hotel or friend’s home for this storm. If evacuating please get this done Friday evening, or at the latest by 6 AM Saturday, two hours before high tide. The attachment includes a list of local hotels. It would be wise to book early as the media & utility companies often book blocks of rooms, you can always cancel if things change for the better.

With the potential for power outages and anticipated travel restrictions please fuel your vehicles, generators, and heating systems (if propane or oil). It would be wise to fuel and start your generators early and please make sure you place them in a safe location to eliminate any exhaust getting into your home.

Things could change with the track and timing of this storm but we are preparing for a significant impact to Scituate. Please stay informed and start your preparations early. We will provide additional advisories as needed.

Be prepared and Stay Safe!

‼FROM SCITUATE EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT‼
âš Winter Storm Warningâš

Good afternoon,

We are forecast to be impacted by a strong winter storm Sunday night into Monday with extremely strong winds, heavy rain, potential for coastal flooding, and power outages possible. We are under a High Wind Warning and believe the strong winds will be the primary impact from this storm. Steady southeast winds 35-40mph with gusts potentially exceeding 60mph are anticipated after midnight to approximately noon on Monday with the peak winds occurring from 4am to 10am.

If the wind gusts do exceed 55mph, we expect to experience tree and limb damage which will likely cause scattered power outages. If the gusts do get into the 60’s, the power issues could be more widespread. Please be aware of downed power lines. If you witness downed power lines stay clear and call 911 and report the issue to National Grid at 800-465-1212 or Eversource for Humarock residents at 800-286-2000.

We are also under a Coastal Flood Warning with splash over to minor coastal flooding expected along our immediate coastal neighborhoods. The moderate high tide at 10:42am is (9.9’) with a 2’ to 3’ storm surge forecast. We are fortunate that the strongest winds are forecast to be from the southeast not the northeast. With southeast winds the Cape would block the highest waves and with most of our coastline facing northeast we expect lesser coastal impacts from offshore winds of this strength.

If the storm does shift to the east, these winds could veer back to the east/northeast so please be prepared along the coast. Please move your vehicles from the flood prone areas and secure any outside furniture or grills still on your decks.

Be prepared for potential power outages, today would be a good time to check your generators to make sure they will start. Get spare gas for your generator and fuel up your vehicles, we all remember the long gas lines from the recent October storm. If you need your generator please make sure the exhaust is facing away from any windows or doors and never set them up in your basement.

Carbon Monoxide has become one of the leading causes of death during storms so please place your generator in safe location and check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. We ask everyone to try to stay home Monday morning with the highest winds having the potential to cause tree, limb, and wire damage. If roads are blocked, we will need time to clear them for safe travel.

âš  Scituate Emergency Management Team Updateâš
High Wind Watch‼️
We are under a high wind watch, forecast to experience a high wind event this afternoon into Friday evening coinciding with an arctic blast of extreme cold. We are forecast to receive steady north winds 35-40mph with gusts potentially exceeding 55mph. Peak winds are expected from 4pm to midnight.
The wind chill factor could bring the temperatures to -15 degrees overnight, exposure to these temperatures can be extremely dangerous so please try to stay indoors. The rain and snow line for this afternoon is forecast to be south of Scituate. If this precipitation line works north to our area as the extreme cold comes in it could create slick roads and sidewalks. Please be aware of this potential if you need to be out this evening.
If the wind gusts do exceed 50mph we could potentially experience tree and limb damage which may cause scattered power outages. Please be aware of downed power lines. If you witness downed power lines stay clear and dial 911 and report any electrical or power issue to National Grid at 800-465-1212 or Eversource for Humarock residents at 800-286-2000.
The anticipated strong north winds should not create any flooding issues but we may experience some splash over on our north facing coastal roads from 8-11pm. Be aware of this ocean spray creating potential icing from Rebecca Road, Turner Road, Oceanside Drive and Edward Foster Road.
We will be opening our Senior Center as a warming center at 9am Saturday morning in case anyone loses power. It will remain open into the afternoon, time will depend on the need.
A second weather event is forecast for Sunday evening into Monday. A coastal storm is expected to impact our area with strong E/SE winds and rain. It may start as snow turning to rain, any accumulating snow is forecast to stay west of us at this time. If the storm moves further east so will the snow/rain line.
We do not anticipate any significant coastal issues beyond splash over if the track stays as forecast. If anything changes with this storm forecast we will be sure to send an update on Sunday.
Stay safe and enjoy your weekend!
