THE SHOES ARE COMING HOME. 🇮🇪

This weekend, something very special will begin its journey to the South Shore.

The bronze shoes of the Global Irish Famine Way are arriving from Ireland — the same powerful symbol that marks the National Famine Way across Ireland and will soon become part of a permanent memorial in Cohasset, Massachusetts.

And on Saturday, October 3, you’ll have an opportunity to see them in person.

Join the AOH of the South Shore and South Shore Irish Heritage Trail at Plymouth Quarries in Hingham for the fundraising launch of the Global Irish Famine Way – South Shore.

You’ll see the bronze shoes alongside the locally selected granite that will become the monument and learn more about the remarkable story connecting the passengers of the Brig St. John, Ireland’s Great Hunger, and the South Shore.

This is about much more than building a monument.

It’s about ensuring that the stories represented by these small bronze shoes continue to educate, inspire and call us to action for generations to come.

Remembering the Brig St. John

For generations, the story of the Brig St. John and the Irish immigrants who lost their lives off the coast of Cohasset in 1849 has been preserved by the people of Cohasset and the Irish-American community of the South Shore.

The AOH of the South Shore is honored to continue that tradition of remembrance.

Please join us on Sunday, October 4 for our annual Brig St. John Commemoration in Cohasset.

Mass will be celebrated at 1:00 PM, with Monsignor Kevin O’Leary serving as celebrant.

This year’s commemoration comes at an extraordinary moment as Cohasset prepares to take its place along the Global Irish Famine Way, ensuring that the story of those who made that journey more than 175 years ago continues to be remembered by future generations.

We hope our Brother Hibernians, friends and members of the South Shore community will join us.

1849: A Journey That Never Reached Its Destination

In the spring of 1849, the Brig St. John departed Galway carrying men, women and children across the Atlantic in search of a new beginning in America.

They were leaving an Ireland devastated by the Great Hunger.

After surviving the Atlantic crossing and nearing the end of their journey, tragedy struck just off the Massachusetts coast. The Brig St. John was wrecked off Cohasset, taking with it the lives of nearly 100 passengers.

Their story has remained part of Cohasset for more than 175 years.

Today, that story is becoming part of something much larger.

Cohasset has been selected as a location along the Global Irish Famine Way, connecting this South Shore community with places across Ireland and beyond that preserve the memory of those who suffered, emigrated and died during the Great Hunger.

On May 2, 2027, a pair of bronze shoes will be permanently placed in Cohasset as part of that international trail.

But before we get there, there is another chapter to this story.

This weekend, the Global Irish Famine Way reaches the United States for the first time.
