This weekend, one of our volunteers was out with her grandson when they noticed a woman experiencing homelessness. The volunteer had “brightness bags” (care packages) in her vehicle and explained that she was going to give one to the woman. After he asked why and she explained, her grandson immediately responded, “I should make her a picture!”
He walked to the back of the car, grabbed markers and paper, and carefully drew a rainbow just for her. The care package met practical needs. The rainbow met a different need. It reminded someone that she was seen. As adults, we often wonder how to teach children compassion. The truth is, they are already learning. They watch how we respond to people. They notice whether we look away or lean in. They see whether we choose convenience or kindness.
Children are watching. When we choose love, generosity, and dignity, we are not only impacting the person in front of us. We are shaping the hearts of the next generation. A simple rainbow reminded us that even the smallest acts of kindness can shine a great light.
