What is it? It’s a Spiny Water Flea. One of the many invasive species we try to prevent from entering our lake. They negatively affect native fish populations by depleting food resources for juvenile fish, and reducing survival rates. They accumulate in large masses on fishing lines and downrigger cables.
What can you do ? Before you launch, carefully inspect and clean your fishing equipment. Drain all water from live-wells, bait buckets, bilges and other reservoirs. Most importantly, and especially if you’ve been in another lake, visit a boat wash station.

It’s time to resister for the Schroon Lake Paddle-Fest on Sept 19th!
Drop your boat at the DEC fishing access on Rt 74, park at the Schroon Lake town beach and we’ll bus you back to the launch. From there paddle your way back to the Boathouse for food, fun and vendors. Oh, and there will be one more chance to buy a raffle ticket for the Hornbeck canoe!!!

Lake stewards are critical in protecting the Adirondack Lakes from invasive species. They inspect boats, canoes, kyacks and paddle boards for invasive species. Stewards provide information, education and recommendations about decontamination, and
they record data so that researchers can track high-risk pathways for invasives. Shout out to our Schroon Lake stewards Becky and Jennifer, for your role in protecting Schroon Lake . We appreciate you!!! 👏👏👏
