The Schroon-North Hudson Historical Society mourns the loss of yet another longtime member of our museum family, Lillian (Noxon) Richardson. She was a lifelong resident of Schroon Lake who passionately loved her hometown, its people and places. Her knowledge of local history could not be overstated.

The mission of the Schroon-North Hudson Historical Society is to preserve and protect the history of our two towns. In 1975, Lillian fought hard to save the Boathouse Theater from being torn down when the Town purchased the property from the Ritter estate. Fifty years later, in June 2024, she was on hand to give remarks when the prestigious Pomeroy Foundation historic marker for Augustus Bogle was unveiled in front of the Boathouse. Mission accomplished!

Through the years, Lillian served as a member of the Historical Society Board as a ready volunteer, helping out wherever she was needed for special events like the Annual Strawberry Festival. Since she lived a short block from the museum building, she would often water the thirsty flowers on her daily walk to town.

Docents were fortunate to share a shift with Lil Richardson. She always had a welcoming smile and was a delight to work with. She lived and loved the history of Schroon and was eager to answer any question that came up.

When a recent inventory of the museum’s collections was done, Lil proved to be an invaluable resource in labeling many of the unmarked photographs. She sorted her way through every file in the filing cabinets from A to Z that year!

The Historical Society is grateful to Lillian for all her years of faithful volunteering. Some individuals are irreplaceable. She is one of them.

Summer has come to an end, and fall is in the air which meant it was time for our 2025 Volunteers to gather at the Rocky Acres Inn B&B for our annual volunteer luncheon. Once again, Laura Donaldson and her assistant Betsy Ross did an exceptional job providing us with delicious foods, and a fun atmosphere. We had 24 volunteers attend. The afternoon kicked off with a moment of prayer to remember our Volunteers we lost this year... Joanne Treff, Ann Breen Metcalfe, Ralph Cook, Bob Yoekel, and Dave Moffit. There is a huge void at the museum now ..we will miss our friends as we move forward. Next on the agenda was a welcome from our Volunteer Coordinator Brenda Borquist, and updates from our President Tammy Whitty-Brown, followed by lunch. While deserts were being enjoyed our President once again thanked everyone who volunteered and gifted each volunteer a gift to show appreciation for their hardwork and then Brenda our Volunteer Coordinator shared our guest statistics and beautiful comments by our 2025 guests at our museum and then some incredible organic brain storming began to happen amongst the volunteers on how to grow the museum on many levels. It was an amazing afternoon. If you are interested in volunteering in 2026 please reach out to our Volunteer Coordinator, Brenda Borquist or our President, Tammy Whitty-Brown. We would love to have you join us.

Over the last few months, the Schroon-North Hudson Historical Society Board of Directors have been busy raising money for our 2025 Building Fund Fundraiser for our up and coming 50th Anniversary.

One of our projects we had mentioned in our spring fundraiser letter was our need for a new and safer sidewalk. Sadly our old plank sidewalk had become very unsafe and it became a mandatory fix to make sure that our volunteers and guest were safe entering the museum. In addition, we had the handicapped ramp inspected and that was found to be sound, however some of the railings had become loose or had fallen off.

We first addressed the railings by having local Schroon Lake contractor Cody Merrill come and replace all the top rails, smoothing down the edges of the new lumber, replacing broken bottom railings, and adding additional support to the 4x4's for the railing so that they could be tightened and avoid any loose parts in the future.

Secondly, we contracted Volt Landscaping & Irrigation Co, Inc of North Creek to come install a new sidewalk using paving stones which turned out beautiful. In addition, they kindly spruced up our flower beds which we look forward to having new flowers in the spring to enhance our new beautiful and safe sidewalk.

We want to thank Cody Merrill and the team at Volt Landscaping & Irrigation Co. Inc for their hard work and their dedication to providing quality work. We appreciate all you have done.

But most importantly, we want to thank all the donors that have donated to our fundraiser so far. Your generosity is helping us complete the renovations that need to be done at the museum by spring of 2026. With out all of your support we would not be able to tackle these monumental projects.

Now that the sidewalk is done, we are now working on gathering bids for painting the building and a new porch roof over the main entrance door and ramp landing. We are excited to have a new look for our 50th Anniversary Celebration in 2026.

To see the before and after pictures of our walkway, please check out the attached photos provided by Duke Connors, Wayne Dewey and Tammy Whitty-Brown.
