Responding in anger or taking liberties in our behavior when we are hurt is a pattern that anyone can easily fall into. It becomes a cycle that grows and becomes harder to extract ourselves from- which is why Paul warns us in Ephesians, "be angry, and do not sin." When we act out of our anger and pain, all we are doing is making the mess messier. Eventually we will have to begin to clean up the mess or it will consume and destroy our lives and our relationships.

Walking the process of life change as we pursue faith and recovery isn't easy...but it isn't complicated, either. One main ingredient throughout this process is honesty; without it, we will never come to know the truth which will set us free. If I am willing to continue being honest by admitting to God and a trusted person the wrongs I found in myself by taking inventory, I am boldly stepping towards the freedom Jesus intends for me to have.
Such an admission on my part is clearly implied in the meaning of the word Jesus used often: repent. Repent means to acknowledge I am in a bad place and to turn from that life towards the one God offers to me. Step 5 is the admission, Steps 6-12 are the turning to a new life. But Step 5 is crucial for us to admit our wrongs so we can be freed from it!

I once heard a wise man say, "If you do not know the purpose for which something was made, you are sure to abuse it." Dr. Monroe was surely correct in his assessment. Many of us have (eventually) discovered that when we live for our own desire, pleasure, or comfort, we are actually abusing ourselves. In trying to avoid surrendering our desire to God's will, we are actually disconnecting ourselves from our one true source of life and fulfillment.
Recovery, then, is a faith journey of discovering our true identity and purpose in God once we reject the lie of pursuing comfort as an ultimate aim. The Bible makes clear that we were created with a purpose, to represent God...and since we were unable to do that in our fallen condition, He has redeemed us and called us back to that same purpose as we are made new in Jesus!
"And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them." Romans 8.28

As we often say here, recovery is more than sobriety- more than simple abstinence from drugs and alcohol. But the flip side of that is, recovery cannot progress far (if at all) in the life of someone who is not decided about their sobriety. AA describes alcohol as an entity which is malicious..."cunning, baffling, powerful", and any addict can attest that drugs fit that description just as well.
So what do we do when we are being pulled aside by these "sins which so easily ensnare us"? Prayer is the key which opens many doors- including this one. The answer is not found in willpower, nor in making excuses for wallowing in our addictions and feeling like a failure. The key is to pray for the grace of God to overcome our weakness and temptation moment by moment and day by day. He promised a way of escape, so we pray for Him to reveal it to us!

Good Morning everyone!
Family Mosaic is joining with other local ministries to support Church Under The Bridge in downtown San Antonio, and we will be serving our neighbors in the streets this weekend. Please keep us in your prayers.
Renee and I are eager to bring help and hope to those we can, and will be purchasing hygiene products, food, gospel tracts and Bibles to give away. If you would like to make a donation to help with this effort, please go to thefamilymosaic.org and click the "donate" tab near the top right corner. Every donation helps, large or small! 5 dollars can purchase a pack of gospel tracts, so please do what you are able to do.
Thank you for your prayers and giving! Blessings-

Unfortunately, the 4th step inventory is often reduced to a slog through our worst history. While it is absolutely necessary for us to admit our wrongs, repent to God, and make amends with those we have hurt, this is not all we have to inventory! Any business that only counted liabilities without recognizing assets would have a set of books so far out of whack that they might never be able to sort out the mess.
We cannot afford to make the same mistake as people of faith and recovery. If we have found the new life only offered in Jesus Christ, we have boundless grace at work in our life to transform us and lead us in the new path of freedom! He enables us to see ourselves as He sees us- as the treasure that had been buried in a field which He gladly gave His all to redeem. Let's begin to wipe the dirt off those treasures!

Accurate diagnosis is essential if we are to find the path forward, out of the lingering issues we have in our lives. I must be willing to brutally honest with myself about my motives, thoughts, actions and their effects on others...or I will remain stuck. God often calls His people to examine ourselves, in the light of His word, so we can see where we are really at. Only then can He begin to reveal the path forward to us.
This is why a fearless moral inventory (as suggested by the 4th step) is so valuable. If I am willing to be honest with myself here, God is willing to free me from self-deception and bo***ge!

I was once seriously addicted to drugs. At that time, it was a point of perverse pride for me; I was the best (bleep) drug addict I knew how to be. No days off, if I could help it. Full throttle down the road I was on, even though I had a vague sense of the doom it was leading me towards. As the NA program states, my fate was sure to be a jail, an institution, or death.
So when God intervened in my life, gave me the help I needed to become sober and begin to truly follow Jesus...all I knew to do was full throttle. I made lots of mistakes (and still do), but I don't spend much time on the sidelines. It makes no sense to me, given all that is at stake, all I have been forgiven and freed from, to go halfheartedly on my journey of faith and recovery. Jesus often challenged people to make a full commitment to Him, or to not associate with Him at all! So why do we get the idea that we can choose to be casual, part time disciples? Complacency in faith, in recovery, is dangerous territory that often leads to relapse or worse.
Go all-in, one way or the other. Get the fence post out of your rear end!
