Stagnation is a very real hazard for anyone who is living a life of faith, but especially for those in recovery. If we become satisfied with our progress and set up camp alongside the road we are supposed to be travelling, we will not have to wait long before trouble will find us again. Coasting will last a short time, but soon we will be rolling the wrong direction and likely not even realize it.
Constant growth is our mission. The follower of Jesus must make a lifetime commitment to being made more like Him, or we risk returning to the old familiar ways of ourselves. Step Ten is a simple reminder for us to keep our foot on the gas, so long as we are pointed in the direction of pursuing God!

When my life seems overwhelming with the amount of problems that I need to solve, I may struggle to decide even where to begin... God has a reliable solution to that question. I can always trust that He wants me to begin in the mirror, allowing Him to work IN me and ON me before addressing problems around me.
Marriage issues? How can I allow God to make me a better partner?
Emotional struggles? The solution will be found in my relationship with God as I grow in my faith, applying His truth to my life.
Tension at work? I need to concentrate on my side of the street, honoring God by being the best I can be at my job.
Many times, we default to the problems we see in others around us as the main issue that will help us feel better...but that is a trap which Jesus warns us against. In fact, the very assumption that everyone else is wrong and I am right (while common) is a symptom of the pride that destroys our soul. We need to focus on the work of God in our own lives, as He transforms us into His image! (2 Cor. 3.18)

Grief is a season that we will all have to pass through, more than once. Some will try to avoid it, or shorten it as much as possible by ignoring the pain of loss- or by medicating it with our favorite distraction. Others will make camp in the season of grief, refusing to allow themselves to see that there is yet a hope for their life beyond the loss they have suffered.
Jesus does not promise His followers a pass from the valleys of grief; He promises to travel the road with us, and ultimately to bring healing to our lives out of that loss. We must grieve our losses, and we must embrace healing for our grief- refusal to do either is a spiritually fatal choice that will lead us to destruction.

Many do not recognize grief in our life unless it is the result of someone's death. This is most unfortunate, because we experience grief most often outside of that context. We suffer loss all the time in life, both as the result of our own sins and failures and those of people around us. We may feel profound loss due to relationships and opportunities lost, seasons of life that have passed us by, and the cumulative effect of smaller losses that add up over time.
Families affected by addiction and alcoholism have experienced an enormous amount of loss; no one is exempt, not the addict at the epicenter nor the family member who runs as far away from the mess as possible. We must begin the healing process by facing the loss we have experienced and feeling the grief of that loss. Only by acknowledging it will we be able to move forward- denying the pain of loss doesn't solve it, it only postpones it and often increases it in the process.

Life is connected. My life today is the result of the decisions I made in the past. My life tomorrow will be shaped largely by the decisions I make today. People who live under the bo***ge of life-controlling issues generally ignore this fact; the consequences of doing so are inevitably destructive.
In order to move past the cycles of bad "harvests" in our lives, we have to be deliberate about clearing out the old residue. We do this by submitting to God in humble repentance, making an inventory of our issues, and resolving them by way of amends and forgiveness. But we must go beyond that, for nature resists a vacuum. We must begin to plant our field with good seed for a future harvest of blessing- or else the empty field will grow weeds all by itself.

Some would say that guilt is an unhealthy emotion. However, that outlook disregards entirely the clear moral and spiritual makeup we have. Guilt is a signal to us of our sin and error- a spiritual equivalent to physical pain. A signal that something is wrong, and that we need to take action to correct it. Guilt that goes unresolved will inevitably lead to shame...a sense that I am now hopelessly damaged. Guilt tells me I have done wrong; but shame tells me I am worthless as a result.
God invites us to be freed from guilt and shame by offering us freedom from them through Jesus- and by making us righteous in Him instead! But none of this can ever take place unless we are candid with ourselves and God about the burden of our failures that we carry. An honest effort to follow the 12 recommended steps will give us a roadmap to unload the weight of our guilt and shame.

The second of our big three obstacles to spiritual growth and recovery is fear. Fear is such a common human experience that we seem to assume that it must be an immovable feature of our lives. And yet, God offers us a pathway to face and overcome our fears together with Him! Instead of removing the scary things from our lives, He chooses to prepare a banquet table for us, with Him, in the scary place, the shadowy valley where our life is threatened by our most deadly enemy (see Psalm 23). God is willing to show us He is the only one worthy of our reverent fear, by deflating every shadow we have formerly cowered before. He simply does this by being present with us, when the fear comes- and inviting us to trust Him to carry us through situations where we have melted in fear in the past.

For the next few weeks, we will look at 3 of the biggest obstacles to our spiritual growth: resentment, fear, and shame. All 3 have in common the power to disrupt our relationships with God and the people closest to us.
Resentments often grow from something small, a minor offense that could have easily been resolved... but it becomes a life consuming thought process. The real reasons we are angry become unclear even to us as our thinking becomes unclear and irrational. We imagine new reasons to nurse the grudge rather than to pursue peace- and we are the ones who suffer the most in the process.

How can I tell if I am growing spiritually? How can I tell if I am making progress in my recovery? It's actually pretty simple. (Simple, not easy.)

I am growing and maturing in faith and recovery if I am becoming more focused on others than myself. When my love for God and people begins to offset my selfishness, I am making progress! Being willing to make amends, as the 8th step suggests, demonstrates great growth in this area for most people. To love God and others is to become a spiritual adult.
