A 3 Alarm fire has now been called out in Merrillville at an apartment building located at 140 E 54th Ct.

Crews were dispatched around 1:55 PM, Saturday, to an apartment building with reporting parties advising smoke coming from the vents. On arrival crews found fire in the roof / attic area, according to radio traffic.

The building was evacuated and power cut off successfully. As of 4 PM crews are still fighting fire in defensive mode from aerial trucks and the outside of the structure.

The Red Cross has been called and officials are not sure on the exact count of people needing assistance at this time.

Current mutual aid companies assisting Merrillville Fire Department are; Superior, Griffith, Highland, Crown Point, Gary, Munster, Lake Hills, Lake Ridge, Schererville, Hobart, Dyer, Canteen Truck.

It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share this sad news.

Our Senior Battalion Chief Thomas Castle passed away suddenly last night.

Tom was a thirty year Hobart Fire veteran, who also served as Union President for over a decade, as well as a Fire Commissioner. He was incredibly devoted to training our firefighters, and maintaining a level of professionalism for all of us to follow.

Before coming to us in Hobart, Tom proudly served in the United States Marine Corps, including Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Afterwards, he was a member of the Army National Guard for several years. In the last few years, he enjoyed volunteering with the American Red Cross.

Needless to say, we are all in shock as we miss our friend dearly. Please keep Tom and his family in your thoughts during this difficult time.

Lieutenant Butrim, Firefighter/Paramedics Sadler and Lacaye died of the injuries they sustained after they became trapped in a collapse while operating at a fire in several 3 story rowhouses.
