Xen and volunteer Kira had an eventful evening and morning. This poor fawn's mom was hit by a car and deceased. Baby was crying and running around the woods in between several houses. It took two days and the caller's help, but they finally caught her! She's been alone for almost three days. Xen doesn't rehab deer, so after catching and checking baby, another rehabber up north was found who will raise and release her.

Moms leave fawns alone for several hours at a time. If you see a fawn sleeping quietly, please leave it alone. They need help if they are wandering around crying, covered in flies, or obviously injured. The ears also start to curl if dehydrated.

Rehabber Xen had special guests over the weekend. Baby raccoons! She wasn't able to keep them because while she's taken the required course and has the shots and experience, she doesn't have the space for the specialized caging raccoons require. Instead, she was able to stabilize them while a licensed raccoon rehabilitator was found. They went yesterday and will grow big and strong under great care!

When Xen released her three baby opossums, they decided to be a bit difficult and didn't go together. We have three separate videos, so if you're interested, the other two are in the comments!

These are the opossums (Hope, Oposta, and HissyFit) who came into care as tiny things back in September. They weren't big enough to go before winter and were overwintered until the weather finally cooperated. Soon, we'll end up with more babies!

🐦
National Nest Box Week ( ) is an annual event running from February 14th to 21st – in the U.K., encouraging people to put up nest boxes to support breeding birds, especially as natural sites vanish. Started in 1997 by the British Trust for Ornithology, it has since become a popular idea internationally, including in the US.

🔨Timing for U.S.: Southern U.S. residents should install boxes by February, while Northern areas should aim for mid-to-late March.

To read more about why, what and how in the U.S. backyards:
https://www.audubon.org/news/build-nest-box-welcome-spring-birds

+ It is important to clean and repair (if necessary) nest boxes every year after the season.
(Different bird species, different box/entrance sizes, different seasons)

Happy !
