Thank you to our friends at The Schaumburg Police Department and The Autism Hero Project for making this important program available in our community.
The Schaumburg Police Department, in partnership with the Autism Hero Project, has introduced the Blue Envelope Program, a voluntary initiative intended to support clearer communication and safer interactions between residents and first responders.
The program is designed for individuals who may experience communication challenges during stressful situations, including traffic stops or other encounters with police or fire personnel. This may include individuals with autism or those with other communication differences. Individuals receive a blue envelope that serves as a visual cue to first responders that additional time, simplified instructions, or adjusted communication may be helpful during the interaction.
The envelope is used to hold important documents such as a driverβs license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance, along with optional information voluntarily provided by the individual or caregiver. This information may include communication preferences or other notes that assist first responders in understanding how best to communicate. Participation in the program is entirely voluntary. The blue envelope is not a medical or legal document and does not impact enforcement decisions.
The goal of the Blue Envelope Program is to reduce misunderstandings, lower anxiety during high-stress situations, and promote safer outcomes for both residents and first responders. By providing clear information at the start of an interaction, officers are better equipped to recognize communication differences that might otherwise be misinterpreted.
Blue envelopes are available at several village locations. Residents may pick up an envelope at the following locations:
Schaumburg Police Department, 1000 W. Schaumburg Rd.
Fire Department Headquarters, 1601 N. Roselle Rd
Temporary Village Hall Finance Department, 1000 E. Woodfield Rd.
No registration, identification or documentation is required to obtain an envelope. For more information about the program, visit schaumburg.com
