Toa Tumaini Foundation

Toa Tumaini Foundation Toa Tumaini Foundation (meaning "To Give Hope") partners with local Tanzanians to provide quality education to children in TZ. Toa Tumaini Foundation, Inc.

Toa Tumaini Foundation was created in partnership with a local organization, Project Hope School. Together we strive to better the lives of street children and orphans, and those at risk of becoming street children and orphans in the village of Kariwa, Tanzania and nearby villages. We provide funding, resources, advocacy, and support to local community members in order to assist in the development

and growth of their projects. Project Hope School assists vulnerable children in the rural village of Kariwa who are at risk of becoming street children or have lived/worked on the street in the past. Its members are also working tirelessly to open a center for children who are currently living on the street. and Project Hope envision an environment in which children can live and spend time that provides them with hope, encouragement and opportunities, empowering them to lead the lives they dream of as well as seeing that they live up to their potential. We are deeply invested in the lives of some of Tanzania's most vulnerable children. Partner Organization:

For a long time, we felt like we had something to prove.
We thought we had to measure up to the big guys.

You know the ones:
• World Vision
• Compassion International
• The organizations with big budgets, big teams, and big reach.

But then something shifted.

We realized we didn’t need permission to do work we cared deeply about.

We didn’t need to do things the same way other organizations were doing them.

We just needed to show up, listen to our Tanzanian community, serve them well, and trust what we had already built—and what we were still building.

That mindset shift changed everything.

It changed how we show up.
How we decide where to focus our energy.
How we define success.
And how we measure impact.

We stopped asking, “Are we doing enough compared to everyone else?”

And started asking, “Are we doing what matters most for the students and families we serve?”

That question has guided us ever since. 🇹🇿

Have you ever had a mindset shift that changed the way you approached your work or your life? Tell us about it below 💙

Your monthly Swahili lesson has arrived.

It's time to learn another verb: the word "jump."

English: Jump
Swahili: Ruka

Special thanks to another one of our preschool students for helping us with translation this month.

What word(s) do you want to learn next? Let us know in the comments!

I co-founded Toa Tumaini Foundation over 14 years ago.

And there's one thing I find myself telling people over and over again:
You can make a difference for one child. And it matters.

Not because it sounds good. But because I've watched it play out again and again.

People often worry they can't make a real impact because the problem feels too big.

But what I've learned is that we don't need to fix every single problem all at once. And more importantly? Helping one child access education changes their life and their family's life. it's a ripple effect.

If I could save you one mistake, it would be this one:

Don't discount your ability to make an impact.

Want to know what people sometimes miss out on?

Committing to monthly giving through our membership: The Village.

Why?
It can feel like a big step. We get it.

The problem is that when you skip it, you miss out on:
• Seeing your donations at work month after month
• Watching kids grow up and knowing your gift played an ongoing role
• Insider behind-the-scenes moments (for members of The Village)

Instead, pause and consider what an ongoing gift would mean for a child in Tanzania. And what it could mean for you.

Nine years ago, this family felt stuck.

A single mother was doing everything she could to care for her two young children, including an infant. But without childcare, steady meals, or a safe place for her children to sleep, providing for her family felt impossible.

Together, we started with the basics:
🤍 Bedding
🤍 Education & childcare
🤍 Nutritious meals
🤍 Ongoing support

Once those immediate needs were met, something incredible happened.

Mom was finally able to focus on finding work and building the future she had always wanted for her family. Sometimes, all it takes is removing the barriers that stand in someone's way.

Today, our favorite part is watching those children grow, learn, and thrive.

This is why we do what we do💙

When you give, you're not just meeting an immediate need—you're creating opportunities that can change a family's future for years to come.

The reason many children in Tanzania struggle to access education isn't because they don't want to learn.

It's because too many barriers stand between them and the classroom.

Some of those barriers include:
📚 The cost of school supplies, uniforms, and school fees
🚶 Long distances to school
👩‍🏫 Overcrowded classrooms with high student-to-teacher ratios
💭 Limited support to help students stay in school and prepare for the future they dream of

That's where Toa Tumaini Foundation steps in.

Here's how we're helping:
✨ Providing free preschool education
🎓 Funding primary and secondary school education
🎒 Covering the cost of school supplies and uniforms
🤝 Walking alongside families to connect them with additional resources and support

We believe every child deserves more than access to a classroom—they deserve the opportunity to learn, thrive, and dream boldly about their future.

Together, we're removing barriers, one student at a time 💙

It's kind of wild to think about all of the things the internet has made possible.

Because of the internet, we've been able to:
• Stay in touch with our friends in Tanzania
• Get regular picture and video updates on students
• Connect with supporters we never would have met
• Invite new donors and volunteers into this work
• Show the world the work we're doing to improve access to education

It's easy to take those things for granted.

Today we're celebrating the opportunities that started with a simple internet connection.

What's something the online world has made possible for you?

One of our favorite questions to ask our students (both new and old) is, "What is your favorite subject in school?"

We love watching kids light up as they tell us how they love to solve math equations, read new books, practice their Swahili, or play at recess (there's always at least one, right?!)

What was your favorite subject in school? Share it with us in the comments!

One of the programs we're most proud of this year is our monthly giving program: The Village.

It works because of 3 important things:
1. It's modeled after and inspired by the community we serve.
The Tanzanian community consistently shows up for each other, putting action to the phrase, "It takes a village."

2. You can choose your level of giving.
We offer three levels of monthly giving, so no matter where you are financially, there's a meaningful way to show up for the children of Tanzania.

3. It brings us together.
Members of The Village don't just give, they belong. Through exclusive updates, videos, and photos straight from Tanzania, you'll see your impact come to life alongside a community of people who care just as deeply as you do.

The best part? Each new member helps ensure another child has access to education on an ongoing basis.
