Let's celebrate the most functional of the arts ... architecture! It's

Paul Schweikher's home and studio, designed in 1937 and built in 1938, is widely acclaimed for its warm and creative use of simple materials, blending Japanese, Prairie and International design concepts into a livable sculpture of habitat. Although it looks familiar to other homes, it stands alone in its design ex*****on of organic material. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and a local landmark, the Schweikher House invites you for tours and upcoming special events like spoken word storytelling, salon concerts and lectures onsite, all on our Events page.

Will Quam of Brick of Chicago provides an overview of Chicago Common Brick as a material in Modernist architecture. Quam will then walk attendees through the Schweikher House and discuss the multiple common brick fireplaces - the signatures of Schweikher architecture.

We love our volunteers and supporters so we invited them for a special field trip to the remarkable Graymoor neighborhood in Olympia Fields to experience the incredible stewardship of Ed Humrich's Lieberman House. The very generous and thoughtful owners provided a tour of the one-acre native landscape transformation as well as an interior tour of one of Humrich's largest residential designs. We gathered for lunch following the inspiring visit. It was the least we could do to thank our volunteers!

Salon Season Kicks Off This Weekend!

Join us for an intimate solo piano performance in the living room of the historic Schweikher House. Light refreshments and w**e included with admission.

Pianist Junwen Liang presents, “Echoes Across Horizons: American Voices in Classical Piano” featuring works by Paul Harvey Aurandt, Amy Beach, Tan Dun, Phillip Glass, Stephen Hough, Florence Price and William Grant Still.

Quam will discuss not only his book but the evolution of brick as a Modernist material followed by a walk through of the Schweikher House highlighting its beautiful common brick. Schiller House, Glen Ellyn, Illinois, 1954

Unusual residential concept of a square box, no exterior windows, but with an interior courtyard surrounded inward facing windows. Mahogany, redwood, Chicago common brick, terrazzo floors, cylindrical brick fireplace. Residential Design Citation Award in Progressive Architecture - January 1954. Listed on National Register of Historic Places September 3, 2008. Demolished in 2016.

Happy birthday to Robert Paul Schweikher, born this day in 1903. We're all so lucky to experience his personal home and studio in Schaumburg, Illinois nearly exactly how he chose to live and work. HBD, Paul!
