Today we had the opportunity to do a chess♟️ demo with a homeschool group, and it was a great reminder of why accessibility matters.

Chess should not feel out of reach, and it should not feel isolating.

At its best, chess is social. It gives kids a chance to think, talk, laugh, compete, connect, and build confidence together.

For families looking for meaningful learning spaces and community, that matters.

When we bring chess into new spaces, we’re not just teaching pieces and moves.

We’re helping open doors and build community.

Our ♟️STORMERS showed up and showed out 🏆🏆🏆

At the end of school year tournament, ASAC♟️had multiple individual winners, and our team earned 1st place in the Advanced Section.

We are proud of the trophies, but even more proud of the growth, confidence, discipline, and community our STORMERS showed throughout the day. These are the kinds of moments that happen when young people are given the chance to compete, learn, and believe in themselves.

Our girls showed up and showed out.♟️🏆

Today, our STORMERS competed in the Queens United All Girls Tournament and walked away as champions.

Mille earned a top place trophy, and Mecca took 1st place in the 2nd-3rd grade section. We are so proud of the way they competed, represented, and rose to the challenge.

What makes this even more special is that they were coached by Coach Hannah. We remember when Hannah played in this very tournament, and now she’s coaching champions. That’s what growth looks like. That’s what leadership looks like. That’s what STORMERS do.

We are excited to announce our inaugural A Step Ahead Chess Summer Camp, happening August 3rd through 7th.

This won’t be your typical chess camp. Campers will sharpen their minds through chess and also get to move, explore, and try something new through activities like soccer, squash, boxing, and more.

At ASAC, we believe young people grow best when they are challenged mentally, physically, and socially. This camp is designed to do just that.

Early registration pricing is available through May 11th. Families can secure their spot with a $50 deposit by May 11th and scholarships are available for families that qualify!

Coach of the Quarter: Coach Hannah ♟️🏆

Coach Hannah went above and beyond this quarter! She brings such a great balance of teaching and fun to every lesson, and it shows in how happy and engaged her students are.

She created a review PowerPoint for the last day of classes, made sure every student felt included, and did an amazing job explaining concepts clearly to a much younger private group.

Our STORMERS competed in the Illinois K–8 State Chess Championship ♟️ and brought home multiple individual and team trophies 🏆

But the real win goes beyond the board.

At A Step Ahead Chess, we’re building a pipeline to purpose:
Students → STORMERS → paid youth coaches → mentors 🔁

This is a chess community, not just a chess club.

Proud to stand alongside our school partners Bronzeville Classical School, Daystar Academy National Teachers Academy and Kellogg Elementary who were all represented 👏🏾

As we head into our Spring season, we’re expanding access for more youth to experience chess, leadership, and belonging.

Shoutout to STORMER Sayyed for taking 🥇 at the Englewood tournament with , and his brother Noble coming through with a strong 4th place finish! 💪🏾
