In one of the most pivotal moments in her life, Liesel was faced with a diagnosis. Knowing that undergoing surgery to remove the tumor would be risky, Liesel decided to participate in a Gateway-funded investigating the safety of ‘tumor paint’, which illuminates the tumor during brain surgery allowing healthy tissue to be spared. Using this innovative new approach, surgeons were able to successfully remove Liesel’s tumor without causing irreversible damage to her brain.

May is Cancer Research Month!

Gateway for Cancer Research explicitly funds phase I and II cancer clinical trials. Early phase trials have been shown to have the greatest patient impact in conquering cancer and yet are the most drastically underfunded. We’re here to change that!

At Gateway for Cancer Research, we know that the strongest relationships lead to the greatest breakthroughs, so we are proud to announce a new partnership with the Research Institute. We’ll be working together to advance a personalized vaccine trial that aims to train patients’ immune systems to combat small cell lung cancer (SCLC), in what will be the only ongoing trial integrating a personalized vaccine into first-line therapy for SCLC, one of the most aggressive forms of lung cancer out there.

Patients Curt Fletcher and Beth Savage took the stage to share how a Gateway trial gave them a fighting chance at conquering their cancer diagnosis. Sons of patient Doug Hull and Gateway funded researcher Dr. Roychowdhury addressed the crowd about the significance of Gateway’s mission to fund innovative cancer research. We are beyond grateful to have the Gateway community join in on a celebration for a phenomenal cause so that we may continue giving people like Curt, Beth and Doug HOPE for a cancer free future.
