Ukraine has become the proving ground for the most important shift in modern warfare, and drones are at the center of it.

In this interview, we sit down with Illya Sekirin, a Canadian-Ukrainian volunteer who joined Ukraine’s defense in 2022 and went on to become a leading voice in drone warfare.
Ilya began on the front lines as a drone pilot and instructor, flying missions for nearly two years. He later evolved into a researcher and translator supporting Ukraine’s General Staff and became an advisor to multiple members of Ukraine’s Stavka, the country’s high command chaired by President Volodymyr Zelensky. Today, he works as a military advisor focused on drone warfare.
We talk about what the war really looks like now, how fast the technology is evolving, and why drones are not “poor men’s airforce” but a disruptive shift in how wars are fought. We also dig into what the West is still missing, what we should be learning from Ukraine in real time, and how to translate those lessons into stronger security for the United States, Canada, and Europe while helping Ukraine stop the aggressor.

Ilya also discusses his new book: Rise of the Machines: Drone Warfare in the Russian-Ukrainian War (Tactics, Operations, Strategy)

2025 became peace-talks theater: round after round of negotiations, headline after headline, and almost nothing to show for it. Why? Because Russia had no incentive to stop. When the battlefield reality still favors the aggressor, “talks” turn into delay tactics, not a path to peace.

In this video I break down how 2025 went nowhere, and what has to change in 2026. Meaningful negotiations only happen when Ukraine has the military strength to stop Russian advances and deny Moscow progress. That’s the leverage that makes diplomacy real.

I also call out a hard truth about pro-Ukraine advocacy in the West: too much of it is trapped in an echo chamber of moral outrage. Yes, Putin is an aggressor and a dictator, but repeating that alone doesn’t help Ukrainian defenders on the front line. Advocacy has to be aimed at one thing: front-line capability.

2026 has to be different. Peace through strength isn’t a slogan—it’s the only strategy that ends this war, and ends it on Ukraine’s terms.

Europe’s €90B loan is a signal, but it’s sending the wrong one: that Russia can outlast and overpower Ukraine in a war of attrition because Ukraine still isn’t being armed at the level required to win. Ukraine needs significantly more weapons, on the order of $100 to $150B (roughly similar in euros), and it needs them fast, not spread thin over years. Without that level of commitment, Moscow reads the message clearly. If this stays a grinding attrition war, Russia believes it can win, and Europe is not serious about ending the war on Ukrainian terms.

On why some EU states hesitate or hedge: many European capitals can see the political games and half measures. So they fall back to what benefits them, energy, trade, and domestic politics, because they don’t see a unified, unmistakable commitment to Ukraine’s victory. If Europe showed a clear, collective decision to stop Russia and back Ukraine to win, everyone would have to align, because there would be no viable alternative. But when commitment looks conditional and fragmented, countries pursue their own interests, and deterrence weakens.

On peace talks: I’m confident Russia has no real incentive to stop. In this war of attrition, it continues to slowly but surely advance toward its objectives. It will not stop until the battlefield reality is reversed. Until Ukraine is equipped enough to halt Russian advances and impose real costs, there are no conditions for Putin to negotiate in good faith or seriously pursue an acceptable agreement to end the war.

Putin’s “security guarantees” line is the usual script. Translation: Russia is looking for a way to dismantle Ukraine’s military and cut off support, so it can continue its aggression against Ukraine and potentially against other future victims as it sees fit.

Corruption in Ukraine is real, not a hypothetical risk. Ukraine needs a path to replace dysfunctional military and political leadership with leadership that can actually deliver battlefield results and economic performance, strengthening Ukraine as a free, modern, and independent country. That is also why Western support should be structured to reduce leakage and maximize impact. Invest directly with the private sector that can deliver battlefield proven capability the military can use immediately to stop the aggressor.

If you want Ukraine to survive and Europe to be secure, this has to be treated as an urgent defense industrial mobilization problem, not a slow moving budget exercise.

Russia just put forward a so called peace plan that rewards invasion, erases war crimes, and gives Moscow everything it failed to win on the battlefield. Many in Congress have already rejected it, and thank God they did. But that alone is not enough.

Ukraine cannot defend freedom with shovels while Russia is oversupplied, over equipped, and over funded. If we want a real peace, Ukraine needs the tools to survive and win. Air defense. Aviation. Drones. Ammunition. Everything required to stop Russian terror and save lives.

Trump’s Mistake: Betting on Negotiations That Can’t Work

In my recent interview, I was asked about the possibility of negotiations between Ukraine, Russia, and President Trump.

My view is clear: these negotiations are unlikely to be fruitful. Russia has both the resources and the determination to continue this war. Until the war becomes more expensive for Russia than peace, Moscow has no incentive to negotiate in good faith. That’s why I remain skeptical that any talks, even if they happen, would produce real results.

We also discussed U.S. restrictions on Ukraine’s ability to use long-range weapons. In the interview, I didn’t frame this part as clearly as I would have liked, so let me clarify here. Some interpret this policy as Trump appeasing Putin. In reality, Trump is most likely motivated by his strong belief that the war must end through negotiations. He knows that if Ukraine hits targets that anger Putin, that makes negotiations harder. The problem is: Putin has no real incentive to negotiate in the first place. That’s where Trump is making a mistake. So yes, in effect this amounts to appeasing Putin, but not because Trump wants to help Russia. He simply doesn’t see another way — and that’s where his thinking is flawed.

The path to peace is simple in principle: make this war costlier for Russia than peace itself. That is the only language Putin will understand.

Dear President Trump,

I am writing to express deep concern over the recent escalation of hostilities in Ukraine and to urge immediate action to bolster U.S. military support to our ally.

On the night of May 23, 2025, Kyiv endured a massive combined drone and missile attack by Russian forces. Explosions and machine gun fire were reported throughout the city, compelling residents to seek shelter in underground subway stations. This assault marks a significant intensification of Russia's campaign against Ukraine.

Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, including your recent two-hour conversation with President Putin, Russia continues to demand Ukraine's surrender as a precondition for peace talks. Such demands undermine the sovereignty of Ukraine and challenge the principles of international law and order.

The United States has a longstanding commitment to supporting democratic nations under threat. Providing enhanced military aid to Ukraine aligns with this commitment and serves our national interest in promoting global stability.

I respectfully urge you to:

Increase Military Assistance: Expedite the delivery of advanced defensive weaponry and support systems to bolster Ukraine's capacity to defend its territory.

Strengthen NATO Alliances: Reaffirm the United States' commitment to NATO and encourage member nations to enhance their support for Ukraine.

Condemn Aggression: Publicly denounce Russia's recent attacks and make clear that the U.S. stands firmly with Ukraine against unwarranted aggression.

By taking these steps, you will reinforce the United States' role as a leader in defending freedom and democracy worldwide.

Sincerely,
