The disturbing assault at Central Synagogue this past Shabbat continued to sow fear and vulnerability in the hearts of Jews, and particularly Jewish New Yorkers. Houses of worship are places where we come together in some of life’s most sacred moments: to pray, to heal, to mourn, to celebrate, and simply to be in community. When our synagogues are attacked, it strikes at our sense of belonging, security and the freedom to gather as Jews.

We stand in solidarity and love with the Central Synagogue community and are grateful for the swift and professional response from their security team and the NYPD.

In this 250th year of our nation, we hold fast to the promise that every person should be able to gather, worship, and live without fear. As we enter this month of Elul leading to the High Holidays, may we turn toward one another with courage and compassion, recommitting ourselves to building strong communities where we all can feel safe and supported. In the face of hate and violence, let us stand together in love.

Join us as we usher in the Days of Awe with fellow Westchester congregations, preparing for the High Holidays’ spiritual renewal. Tony Award winner Ari’el Stachel (The Band’s Visit) performs his one-man show, Other, a funny, fearless exploration of identity, mental health, and self-acceptance. We’ll also change our Torah mantles to white.
