Our Garden Club is small, but we purposely designate moneies or projects to various local organizations. Every year we make Christmas cards to send the the residents of a local nursing home/ assisted living center. The facilities chosen this year are the ones in Iola and Manawa. We made over 80 cards by hand. Some of us had never made a homemade Christmas card! Ila Sanders created the design, brought the materials and taught us how to make them. Here are a few pictures of our learning session. As you can see, we are all earnest about doing it “just right!”🎄🎄

The conclusion of Thanksgiving and the arrival of snow signal the start of the Christmas decorating season. Our commitment to beautifying the Scandinavia Memorial Park, Ellison Athletic Field sign for all holidays remains steadfast, courtesy of our dedicated members. The 'before' and 'after' images below illustrate this transformation.

Now, all we need is a little sun to power up the solar string lights! ❄️☀️

The learning activity at our October meeting was taught by Dorothy Shaver. Although the no-sew folded fabric Scandinavian Star was a bit challenging for some of us, it was enjoyable to learn something new!

First phase of fall garden cleanup complete! The tall phlox were cut back, the petunias were pulled from their summer pots and the bright, golden marigolds were dead headed to encourage the plants to continue producing flowers until it’s too cold.

Show us in the comments plants or shrubs in your garden that are still providing fall interest. If you have none, show us your fall outdoor display.

The fall Tri-Valley Gardener’s Show occurred on September 16 at Saint Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Waupaca. The event was co-sponsored by the Town and Country Garden Club and the Scandinavia Garden Club. Carrie Esh, owner of Fountain Lake Flowers, delivered a presentation on storing tender flowers for winter. The agenda comprised a judged flower show, luncheon, raffle, door prizes, and a sales table. The theme, Sunset on Summer, was illustrated by the attached pictures showcasing all the entries submitted for the judged flower show. Notwithstanding the hot summer, the skilled gardeners crafted many stunning arrangements.

We met at the IOLA community Gardens with the specific purpose of visiting the children’s garden. Each year we donate money for them to use for seeds, crafts, and other supplies. As gardeners ourselves we encourage children to garden because as they garden, it teaches them responsibility and patience along with a connection to nature. Of course, it also encourages healthy, eating, physical activity, and basic science knowledge from watching the weather’s impact on growth, the worms in the soil, the insects on the plants, the pollinators, the development of a seed and to the final outcome of holding a carrot in their hand and eating it. 🥕👩‍🌾👨‍🌾
Not all pictures in this post were from the childrens’ area as we also found the adults portion to be interesting.

The Scandinavia Garden Club has begun beautifying both Iola and Scandinavia by planting and tending to highly visible plantings in each community. Each member participates in a schedule of weeding and watering throughout the growing season.

Our June monthly meeting included a special guest, Dr, Fred Raschke, a local chiropractor, to teach us how to avoid injury while gardening through proper ergonomic practices. It’s never too late to learn!

The recent rains have made weeding our gardens more productive! See the last photos.

Come and join our club if you are interested in gardening! We would love to have you!
