It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Peter Rutledge Schlick.

Peter’s wake will be Tuesday, March 31, 2026, from 4 until 8PM at Thomas F. Dalton Funeral Home in Hicksville, New York. His funeral Mass will be Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at 11:00 AM at St. Ignatius Loyola Church in Hicksville, New York.

Peter was a Principal in Schlick Design Group, a renowned, award-winning residential and business landscape design firm. He earned his Ornamental Horticulture Master’s degree at the University of California, Davis, became a SUNY Farmingdale professor of Landscape Construction, and served on the Board of Directors for the LI Nurseryman’s Association. Peter was widely respected for the dedication, integrity and care he showed to his clients, colleagues and employees.

LINLA proudly announces the winners of its 45th Annual Design Awards Program at a Gala Event held on February 29, 2026. The event celebrated excellence in landscape design, honoring outstanding projects and the talented companies behind them.
This year’s competition saw a record thirty-one entries, showcasing the creativity and expertise of Long Island’s premier landscape professionals. Winning companies and their respective awards include:

Hail the Mighty Moth!

Why Moths Matter More than You Might Think as Pollinators.

Back in October, I went to a meeting at our local Land Trust. One topic that stood out to me was the astonishing diversity of pollinators in the area. I listened closely, and I learned a lot that day.

The greenhouse and nursery industries create landscapes that, on the surface, look very different from the native ecosystem I was standing in. Still, I opened my arms and remarked, “While our gardens and landscapes may appear to be artificial compared to this natural scene, the greenhouse and nursery industries are your allies in protecting our ecosystem. It may have taken time, but our industry now firmly stands in the camp of pollinators.”
