We hope everyone had a great Memorial Day. There were great celebrations in Bayport, Sayville, Oakdale and throughout Long Island. Long Islanders show up for the nation and for their hometowns. The Museum proudly hosted three hundred locals for a fun patriotic concert and four hundred athletes for a Murph Workout.

It's in that spirit that our team encourages runners and volunteers to support the legacy of Michael Murphy on June 27th. Come run or help out at the Run Around the Lake (Lake Ronkonkoma): https://murphsealmuseum.org/events/run-around-lake/ The event includes a 5k and the half marathon starts 7am. This event is proudly lead by the Ronkonkoma Rotary

For Memorial Day, our team encourages locals to learn about the veterans interred in our local cemeteries. This archive of local records was lovingly created thanks to the years of painstaking research done by John and CarolAnn St. Lawrence:

https://www.restingvetsofsayville.com

Our team, especially Tim Leigh-Manuell, brought this database on-line. We feared we’d lose the St. Lawrence’s work might be lost. We also want the community to take an interest and learn about our local veterans. They made this town and our nation what it is.

We could not be more proud of the Sayville Fire Department. They risk their lives every day to protect us and our homes. When you consider the grit and commitment they showed training and completing the Murph Workout, on top of what they already do, you realize how lucky we are to have them.

This morning, five members of the Sayville Fire Department participated in the annual Murph Challenge in honor of Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy, who was killed in action during the Operation Red Wings.

Held each year at the Lt. Michael P. Murphy Museum, “Team Broadway Ave.” took on the ultimate test of endurance: a 1 mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats, followed by a second 1 mile run.

Months of training and preparation paid off as these members pushed themselves physically and mentally and successfully completed the challenge.

Team Broadway Ave. (L–R): Firefighter Matt Quarte, Ex-Captain Joe Golio, Firefighter Tim Murphy, Firefighter Connor Cutolo, and Lieutenant Danny Fox.

Congratulations to all on an incredible accomplishment and for honoring the legacy of Lt. Michael P. Murphy through dedication, perseverance, and teamwork.

The LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum's inaugural Star Spangled Concert was a huge success. Hundreds of people turned out for a great performance by the North Shore Community Band on Tuesday, May 19th. The audience got a very special message from the sailors of the USS Michael Murphy, which is engaged in the Gulf of Hormuz. The sailors and commanders wished all audience goers well and updated us on their activities.

Among Jamie Atkinson's many hats was serving as a trustee for the LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum. Jamie gave his life for our nation by contracting a 9-11 related illness when responding to Ground Zero as a 19 year-old. Jamie was the youngest Chief in Community Ambulance History, a highly decorated MTA Detective and for many years was the youngest 9-11 related cancer survivor in the nation. Jamie, because of his compromised immune system, repeatedly risked his life by serving as the Suffolk County Deputy Coordinator for Emergency Services to fight the pandemic. Jamie was a community treasure. He will never be forgotten.

Metropolitan Transportation Authority Police Benevolent Association Detective Jamie Atkinson (Retired) passed away on June 27, 2025 at the age 43 after battling a rare cancer tied to his response at the World Trade Center following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

As a 19 year old volunteer, Atkinson was among the youngest responders at Ground Zero. His time spent engaged in the search-and-rescue operations at the pile led to a rare form of cancer which would not be diagnosed for some time.

Jamie continued to serve with the Community Ambulance Company in Sayville and in 2003 joined the MTA Police Department where he rose to the rank of Detective and while on the way picking up several awards and accolades.

Even after being diagnosed and still fighting his illness, Jamie continued to give back to his community. Serving on Advisory Boards, The Community Ambulance Board and anywhere he felt he could help other he was there.

Jamie was forced to retire in 2019 but he never stopped, Jamie never quit.

It was said that Jamie was the epitome of service, kindness, courage and strength. He went above and beyond helping those in need and serving his community. His impact and selflessness will live on forever and will never be forgotten.

Detective Jamie Atkinson was remembered on Tuesday, May 5, 2026 when his name was added to the Black Granite Wall of the NYS Police Officers Memorial.

A member of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Police Benevolent Association Board traces Jamie's name on paper to bring back to the PBA Office.
