For groups considering assisting Sandy survivors:

This imortant traiining info passed on to Valley Relief Council by Lutheran Disaster Responce and FEMA

An in-depth Free mucking and gutting training will be presented by Dale and Jeannie Peercy will be held at two locations:

Saturday, December 8, 8:30 to 3:30 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 102 N. Hellertown Avenue, Quakertown.

Sunday, December
9, 8:30 to 4, Trinity Lutheran Church, 100 N. Church St., Hazleton. Worship will begin at 8:30. The course will begin at 9.

All trainings are free and lunch will be provided. Registrations are needed. See below.

While the course is open to anyone, it is particularly geared to those who will be leading teams and/or are willing to train others. Please note: mucking and gutting in areas impacted by flooding, mold or other contamination is not appropriate for anyone under 18, since their lungs are not fully developed and are especially vulnerable to damage.

Shorter trainings for those who want to learn more about assisting with cleanup and rebuilding will be scheduled in the new year.

To register for the December trainings or to volunteer to assist in eastern PA, contact Dianne Fox, [email protected] or 610.428.4598.

Spent today meeting and touring with the Associate Program Director Of Lutheran Disaster Responce NATIONAL office. Joseph Chu is second in command for the entire country!! He was here today to collect information about the progress in our area, and to access needs in an effort to further assist area residents still rebuilding from last years flooding. There is still much work to be done here, and this visit will allow for further networking to bring in skilled workers to help assist the rebuilding process.

Two Athens High Seniors as their senior project will hold a spaghetti dinner to benefit the Valley Relief Council on Sunday Nov 11th at the Athens Methodist Church 4:30-6:30 pm.

The VRC continues to coordinated with disater relief agencies and bring in volunteers from several hours drive away to assist the MANY homes in our area that are still being rebuilt after last years devestating flooding. We hope to be able to continue to provide housing for these groups for as long as possible. These skilled workers have done many mission trips to other disaster areas such as New Orleans, Mississippi and Joplin Missouri, and have said that the facilities here are top notch. Many of the teams have come on multiple trips (at their own expence) and others have already expressed interest in coming back again.

So spread the word to come out and enjoy a great meal, and support our mission of HELPING OUR NEIGHBORS REBUILD THEIR LIVES!!

I would advise people to be sure while donating items for those in the storm ravaged ares to limit your donations to items that are usable. It is important if you decide to donate items such as clothing especially that you send WEATHER APPROPRIATE CLOTHING. One thing that happens in almost every disaster in people's desire to be of assistance, the donation of clothing is overwelming, and can cause
almost another disaster (I know this from my experience here last year as one of the people who began this journey in the clothing area) While clothing is needed, please stick to items that are usable in this weather, and would be appropriate for living in shelter type setting, and clothing that would be worn doing clean up type work. Remember the very small and the very large folks. NEW UNDERWEAR AND SOCKS are hard to come by, and are needed!! Sweats are being asked for. Warm coats are also a good idea as it is getting cold. Another good idea is to send Back Packs and duffle bags for people who are staying in the shelters. They have limitted space at the shelter, and no way of storing what they do have (I witnessed people here wearing multiple layers of clothing because they had no way to store them) While donating is important to help the people, donating items that are not usable for these purposes can overwelm both volunteers needed for other tasks, and cause a storage issue. So PLEASE, if you choose to send clothing items, please keep this in mind!!
