Hugh spent the entire evening locked in an intense standoff with the “other turkey," the one who lives in the shiny truck bumper and apparently has a lot of nerve. Every time Hugh puffed up, that guy puffed right back. Every time Hugh strutted, the other turkey strutted harder. And when Hugh gobbled? Well…the echo gobbled louder.

We’re pretty sure Hugh was convinced he was defending the farm from a bold, unrelenting intruder. Meanwhile, the rest of us were just trying to get chores done while he threw himself into battle with his own reflection like a feathery gladiator.

We tried explaining it to him, but Hugh is a turkey of principle. And that other turkey? He simply refused to back down.

Honestly, I’m not sure who ultimately won, but I am sure Hugh will be regaling everyone with the tale of how he fought long and hard against the “other” turkey.

Tommy is back home and resting. His surgery went wonderfully. In total, he had six teeth extracted: 3 canines and 3 smaller ones. He’s still a little bit woozy and a tad confused, but he doesn’t appear to be in any pain.

He’ll be on a strictly wet food diet for the next few weeks until we get the all clear from the vet, permitting him to eat kibble again. Thank you, all, for your donations, well wishes and positive thoughts. We are so grateful for your support. ❤❤️‍🩹❤️

We dropped Tommy off at the vet first thing this morning. We gave them permission to take any additional teeth needed to keep him comfortable. Since he’s a senior, we don’t know how many more times he’ll be able to safely undergo anesthesia. Our boy is the first case of the day, so we’re hoping for updates soon. We’re keeping everything crossed for a smooth procedure.

Thank you, truly, to everyone who donated and sent love his way. Your kindness means more than you know. We’ll keep you posted. ❤️‍🩹

Hi, everyone. We could really use your assistance. This is Tommy. Tommy is one of the sweetest cats you’ll ever meet. He showed up at our front door in the middle of winter 2019, starving and looking for respite from the freezing air. He was so hungry, we were able to trap him successfully the very next evening with the help of a little wet food.

Tommy was so grateful for the act of kindness, we like to say he adopted us, or rather, our dogs. I’ve never met a cat more desperate to be like his canine siblings. He sleeps curled up next to them. He begs at the dinner table for food, giving the same, sad eyes. He even plays fetch if you toss a toy. We lovingly call him our fourth dog.

Tommy is also my office buddy. He spends every workday cuddled up next to me in my office chair. During the winter months, he makes himself right at home snuggled down in my lap under the electric blanket. He’s a kind soul who was dealt a rough hand at life.

This is where we need your help. Tommy has a condition called “feline resorptive lesions,” whereby a cat’s body essentially breaks down and rejects its own teeth, leading to incredible pain and discomfort. In Tommy’s case, the disease has already affected several of his smaller teeth and his upper canines. Many of his lower dentures have been completely absorbed.

The primary treatment for this condition is tooth extraction. The good news is they have an immediate opening for surgery tomorrow, which means Tommy won’t be in pain too much longer. The bad news is the procedure isn’t inexpensive. I’ve included the estimate from the vet in this post. Even with our nonprofit discount, we’re still looking at roughly $1,200 to cover the cost.

If you’d like to help Tommy get the treatment he needs, we’d be incredibly thankful. Every donation, no matter the size, brings him one step closer to a pain‑free life. Thank you for always showing up for our animals when they need it most. Your kindness truly changes their world. ❤

Last evening, we had a very interesting intake. A man reached out, explaining he found a chicken near his mailbox. He’s lived in the area for years and no one near him keeps chickens, to his knowledge. What further added to the conundrum is this poor girl was covered in some sort of road debris: asphalt, tar, engine oil? She smelled like a mixture of a mechanic’s shop and fresh tar and chips.

She has cuts and abrasions on her wings and stomach, she’s favoring her right leg, and her beak looks as if it were filed down, forcefully. All these signs lead us to believe she was caught in the undercarriage of a vehicle and dragged for a time before breaking free and, ultimately, ending up in front of her rescuer’s mailbox.

We immediately got her started on pain meds when she arrived. Once they had a chance to start working and she had the opportunity to decompress for a little while, we ran a warm bath to begin removing the worst of the black goo from her body. We made some progress. Her skin is mostly clear. We didn’t want to induce further damage by scrubbing. Our vet recommended using sports tape remover spray to clean up her feathers. He says that’s his go to for animals stuck in glue traps and other sticky substances. We ordered a bottle last evening.

The good news is this little girl is a fighter. After her bath, we set her up in a quarantine enclosure with a heating pad, fresh food and water. One look at the feed and she dove right in. It’s no wonder. She’s so skinny, her poor keel bone is protruding. A chicken of her size and breed should weigh close to five pounds. She’s barely even two.

We’ll be monitoring this sweet lady’s progress for the next few weeks. We’re hoping the physical trauma she endured is mainly superficial. We can’t rule out internal injuries yet, but the outlook seems promising. Our vet says we’re on the right track.

In the meantime, please join me in welcoming Gertrude to the Sanctuary family! She’s safe, she’s loved, and her healing is already underway. Brighter days are ahead for this sweet girl. ❤️‍🩹

🐟 UPDATE! 🐟
We had a tank donated! Thank you, Anna Schreckengost!

Hi all. I have a favor to ask. Does anyone have an extra 10 gallon fish tank they would be willing to donate to the Sanctuary? We have a very sick goldfish here. As I was cleaning out our ten gallon tank we use as a hospital tank, I dropped it and the corner shattered. I have the poor fishy in a temporary five gallon plastic container, but I would love to be able to give him a little more room since he’s nearly a foot long. If he starts feeling better, he’ll definitely need the extra space to stretch out his fins.

Someone will be here at the Sanctuary this evening until dark if you have one you have one to drop off. Thank you so much! ❤

I just love this picture. Saturday morning, we walked into the barn to discover Ben had, once again, lost his fly mask somewhere out in the field. The biting flies have been relentless, so finding that mask became our top priority.

When we finally spotted it, Jesse picked it up, popped it onto his own head for “fly protection,” and started walking back toward the horses. Whatever he looked like, it must have been something, because Liberty, Ronny and Ben all froze mid‑graze. They lined up in a perfect row and just stared at him. Not a sound. Not a blink. Just three deeply concerned horses trying to figure out what strange creature was marching their way.

The moment they recognized the intruder was, in fact, Jesse, you could almost hear the collective equine sigh of “we really can’t take you anywhere.” It was priceless.😁

Hi all! The rain may be hanging around this afternoon, but the forecast for this evening looks absolutely beautiful. We’ll be in Oakmont tonight from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm for the Oakmont Night Markets and we’d love to spend the evening with you.

Our booth will be filled with cute collectibles, handmade crafts, Sanctuary merch, freshly made spreads from the farm, honey courtesy of our rescued bees, beeswax lip balm, plus a chance to meet a few of our animal ambassadors…including Ronny! We’ll also be raffling off a beautiful hibiscus plant, generously donated by the Kiski Garden Center!

Come enjoy the nice weather, stroll the market and say hello. We can’t wait to see you!

There’s a silver lining to all the storm damage. The fallen trees have gifted Lenny an unbelievable collection of top‑tier sticks. He’s been “helping” with cleanup by testing every single one, tail wagging, stick crumbs everywhere. I’m not sure how much work he’s getting done, but he’s definitely having a blast. 😁

06/12/2026

We had a few trees come down around the property, just missing our tractor and round pen. The wind took out our sign out front, too. We're so grateful all of the animals are okay and nothing was damaged that can't be fixed.

How are you guys faring out there after the storms this afternoon? Hope everyone is safe and sound! 💜
