PRACTICE FORWARD — 2026

A series of embodied community practices exploring attention, relationship, improvisation, and what becomes possible when we listen closely together.
We will move through practices of peripheral togetherness, mutuality, collective attunement, and emergent composition, building toward The Oracle, a culminating community performance at the Haw River Ballroom.

DATES
October 8 — Group Shake
November 10— Explorations in Mutuality
November 24— The Oracle Rehearsal
December TBD — The Oracle at Haw River Ballroom

The Oracle is an emergent performance structure created by Lina (Queralt Jorba) and DeeJay (Dr.Daniel Hayes), built through deep listening, creative play, and collective improvisation. Those who have practiced with us throughout the series are invited to step into the performance, while friends, community members, and curious witnesses gather around it as audience.

Come for one event or follow the whole arc.

Practice Forward is produced by Culture Mill in partnership with Haw River Ballroom, with support in part from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Free and open to all ages, bodies, abilities, artists, improvisors, movers, musicians, and community members.

Culture Mill is increasing the scope of its international work ✨

From codirector: Murielle Elizéon: “I was in Paris last week to attend the work of nora chipaumire. Coming back to La Ménagerie de verre a ‘temple of contemporary dance,’ after 25 years of absence, I found a sense of community and sisterhood with a large group of Black women and female-identifying Afro-descendant people in the room. It was profound and significant; 25 years ago I felt alone. No one else was Black. In those dark times, it is important to also see that change has happened and this brought me a whole new sense of hope and joy.” ❤️✨🌱

Murielle was joined in Paris by her sister Isabelle Elizéon, researcher in environmental humanities and in Art/Science for exploratory meetings around “Tropiques in Blue”, a transdisciplinary collaboration which explores the idea of ‘Tropics’ as a mythical, Edenic place, which has inspired many Western world fantasies and led to colonialism, exploitation and extraction. “Tropiques” asks: What is the place of perform-ing/performance in deconstructing our colonized imaginary/imagination together? How do the nature of a “spectacle” (in French, from the Latin *spectare*: to look at) and the embodied experience of witnessing and being witnessed lend themselves to a collective felt awareness of the dynamics at play? ☀️

Sometimes you discover something out in the world that you can’t quite name or categorize; but you realize you can describe the feeling of it, the texture of it through play and curiosity. There is mystery and potential here. Such an experience is a gift that invites and develops presence, intuition, as well as the deeper skills of attention and listening.
The same principle is true of our interior worlds, which is a key aspect of Inner-Relationship Focusing. Come learn how to develop the skill of unearthing inner treasures which, along with other aspects of this work, can lead to a deeper quality of presence, compassion and the ability to listen deeply to the next organic steps of your life as it unfolds.

Culture Mill collaborator, Kamara Thomas has been in residency with Culture Mill this spring. The Durham-based songspeller and storyteller reports from the lands she has been working on:

“Spending time in the wilds of Hyde County— salt marshes and unsullied beaches have been nourishing me. I’ve been going back to basics: breath, voice, land. I’m exploring how the non-human world, especially the Avianr kingdom, communicates, in search of a musical language derived from the Earth’s rhythms.”You can learn more about Kamara’s work at www.kamarathomas.com

This project was supported by the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

Culture Mill collaborator and Durham-based artist, R Stein Wexler has been in residency with Culture Mill this Spring. A self-taught artist trained as an urban planner, Stein’s research-based practice spans civic art, social practice, and multimedia installation.

During her three month residency, she’s been exploring dominant notions of time, including productivity and efficiency, while developing a new series rooted in humor and the familiar form of the calendar.

As her residency concludes in May, stay tuned for opportunities to experience this evolving body of work!
