Today’s Forks Field Day was one for the books! With help from our special guests, The California Highway Patrol, students learned about speed and velocity on both land and water!

Sargent Gordon brought a trailer full of bikes and helmets and talked to the kids about bike safety. The students got to learn about the tools the CHP uses to measure speed, and even got to see how fast they could ride their bikes. The kids all agreed that riding bikes with Officer Gordon and his partner was a lot of fun!

For our water component we learned about velocity by measuring stream flows. This entailed having the students collect data and use formulas to calculate their measurements. Upper graders donned waders and felt bottom boots as they worked with the SRRC to measure the flow in the mainstem. The lower graders used the float method, and took great delight timing their boats as they navigated a fast moving stretch of nordheimer creek. We were truly amazed at how enthusiastic and serious they all were about recording their data!

Sometimes things just flow together really well, and today was one of those days!

A big shout out to Junction Elementary School Staff and families for their support, Cathy Leavens for making us lunches, and of course to the CHP, who helped make this day extra special for the kids!

On September 22nd, SRRC and a handful of volunteers set out to remeasure the Devils Canyon Colossus. Knowing that the trail was badly overgrown, we came equipped with hand tools, ready to dive and climb our way through the brush. Many hard working hands made it a doable task; after bushwhacking for 2.5 miles, we made it to the stunning base of the Devils Canyon Colossus.

After marveling, paying our respects and eating lunch, we set out taking measurements.

We measured the circumference(478 inches), and calculated the diameter(12.7 ft ), height(154.7 ft) and average crown spread(40.27 ft).
The Devils Canyon Colossus has a Big Tree score of: 645 points.

We will be submitting the required data and photos to the Register of Champion Trees so that our local wonder can retain its status as The Largest Incense Cedar.

We would like to extend additional gratitude and a shout out to Clara Church from Ft. Jones. She has been encouraging us to measure and register the Colossus in time for its 10 year update. To top it off, she and her brother Sam Church joined us!

We missed the opportunity of getting a group shot with everyone that showed up today, but with help from a good sized group of srrc folks and community volunteers, we cleaned up trash from 14 miles of the North Fork and dispersed camp sites.
Thank you all for pitching in! 🙌🏽🫶🏽

Today was our Watershed Education Program’s first Forks Field Day of the ‘26-‘27 school year- Our theme of the day was Magnificent Monarchs and Milkweed!
Students shared their knowledge and learned about Monarch Butterfly’s life cycles, habitat needs, and their amazing migration.
We created milkweed focused botanical art, went to the river for nature journals and collecting milkweed seeds, which we have stratifying in the fridge so we can start growing them out in a month or two!

The Salmonid Restoration Federation's annual Salmonid Restoration Conference is the largest event of its kind on the West Coast. It is a multi-day conference covering the most up-to-date technical, biological, cultural, and policy-related topics, field tours and workshops for people engaged in salmonid restoration work.

At this year's conference, the Salmon River Restoration Council’s Restoration Director, Karuna Greenberg, and Associate Director, Lyra Cressey, were awarded the Gordon Becker Memorial River Advocate Award in recognition of their commitment to being strong advocates and stewards of the Salmon and Klamath Rivers.

Our Board President, Toz Soto, also took home the Restorationist of the Year Award for his work as a Fisheries Biologist for the Karuk Tribe's Department of Natural Resources.

We are deeply honored to have received this recognition, along with our neighbors, Charnna Gilmore and Betsy Stapleton, at the Scott River Watershed Council, who were awarded the Golden Pipe Award for being innovators in salmonid restoration!
