Chikaming Open Lands is the local land conservancy dedicated to preserving the open spaces and natural rural character of Berrien County. We work to protect and restore native plant and animal habitat, improve water quality, and permanently preserve ecologically significant forests, prairies and wetlands, as well as prime farmland and other open spaces in this area. We own and manage a number of n
ature preserves in the area that are open to the public to enjoy, and we also protect privately owned land via conservation easements. After all, conservation begins and ends with people. There must be people to do it, people to advocate for it, and it is the people in a community who benefit. So our conservation goals are not only in the service of trees and rivers and wildlifeโalthough we love all those things-- but of PEOPLE, making the places where they live, work and play better for everyone.
