I’ve done a lot of soul searching lately, in regards to rescue work. Who I am, what’s my purpose etc.
Not being to take in horses at the moment has not only wounded my soul but made me stop and reassess what my “job” is if it’s not saving lives.
Our herd is stable, other than the unexpected things that arise. Hell that’s bound to happen if you just have your own pet horse or you’re part of a larger operation that saves a horse a day.
I thrive in chaos, peace scares me, so I need a “job”, a focus, otherwise I spread that energy like wildfire. I am aware of each horses needs here but thought there’s no better time to start really seeing them for where they are in their recovery .
That’s the reason I started video taping more. Let me assure you, I hate being in pictures and videos. It’s a very vulnerable place to be in this day and age. The keyboard warriors can’t wait to rip into you for the smallest thing. I am a reactive person so you can imagine how well I handle that.
Anyway…off track…I thought the videos would give me a better glimpse into their behavior, their feelings, what gives them peace and what scares them. I’m with these horses every day but it’s so easy to miss things.
For example yesterday when I was grooming Beth (you saw about 10 secs) but it was really a few minutes of video. She started off very calm and relaxed then the dogs started barking, my daughter came home, the goats started running around, and you could see her ears flicking , her focus shifting, and I’m no animal communicator but when (I think) she had had enough, she shifted her weight as to tell me ok come here please . When I approached her head she seemed to calm a little and refocus.
These are signs I probably wouldn’t have noticed (without the video) just grooming away lost in the moment. I’m going to share the whole video so you can see what I mean.
I think for now my “job” will be to pay more attention to language and try to be more proactive and to adapt better. Video taping gives me a great opportunity to do so.
So get ready for more of them with yours truly…and be prepared for the sick outfits I rock…maybe that could be its own thing…fashion by Kristie ❤️
