Why It’s “Women Veterans Recognition Day” – Not “Women Veterans Day”

On June 12th, we celebrate women Veterans and honor their incredible contributions, but it’s important to recognize the true meaning of the date and its official name.

June 12, 1948 marked a turning point in history: The signing of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act granted women the right to serve as permanent, regular members of the U.S. Armed Forces. That’s why we honor Women Veterans Recognition Day.

Today, and every day, let’s celebrate service, remember history, and continue to uplift stories.

Women Veterans Recognition Day is observed annually on June 12 to honor the military service and sacrifice of women who have worn the uniform. It commemorates the historic signing of the Women's Armed Services Integration Act in 1948, which granted women a permanent place in the regular U.S. Armed Forces.

History and Significance:
• Legislative milestone: President Harry S. Truman signed the act into law on June 12, 1948.
• Permanent status: It allowed women to serve as regular, permanent members of the military.
• Broader legacy: The day celebrates over 250 years of women's service to the country, dating back to the Revolutionary War.

Observance and Recognition:
• Not a national holiday: It is not currently a federally designated national holiday, though over 20 states officially recognize it.
• Key celebrations: The Military Women's Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery hosts the official national commemoration event.
• VA resources: The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs utilizes the day to highlight its specialized programs via the VA Center for Women Veterans.

🌸 Join Us for Our First June WVCE Monthly Lunch Meetup! 🌸

Ladies, it’s time for another wonderful afternoon of connection, conversation, and community! 💜

The Women Veterans of the Coastal Empire will be gathering for our June 13th lunch meetup at Billie-Jo's Place in beautiful Sylvania, Georgia. Come enjoy delicious food, great company, and the opportunity to spend time with fellow women veterans from across the Coastal Empire.

Everyone is welcome to order what works best for them and simply pay for their own lunch.
