A biologist in Indonesia, a lifelong diver and surfer, came home to Bali after years living abroad and found the beaches that had shaped him buried under a tide of plastic waste. Indonesia sits near the very top of the world's plastic polluters, second only to China, and confronted with that scale of damage he decided against the usual response of despair, choosing instead to engineer a material that would fail in all the ways plastic succeeds.
The result is a shopping bag built from cassava, a cheap and abundant tropical root that grows readily across the Indonesian islands, blended with vegetable oil and organic resins into something that mimics plastic almost perfectly while using no oil-based material at all. It looks like plastic, it stretches like plastic, and it carries a load of groceries like plastic, which matters, because a replacement that behaves worse than the original is a replacement nobody actually adopts.
Where the two part ways is in water, since dropping the cassava bag into a hot glass causes it to dissolve within minutes into a harmless liquid, rather than fragmenting slowly over centuries the way conventional plastic does. To strip away any doubt about what that liquid contains, the inventor staged a demonstration no plastics executive would ever attempt, dissolving one of his own bags in a glass of warm water in front of the camera and then drinking the whole thing down.
The video traveled fast, and the logic behind the stunt is what gave it force, because ordinary plastic bags kill marine animals that mistake them for food and then shatter into microplastics that poison the food chain indefinitely, whereas this bag does the reverse and breaks down into organic material that adds nutrients to the water. It isn't a flawless fix, since the bag costs a few cents more and scientists rightly warn that growing crops for packaging could compete with growing crops for food if it scales too fast, yet there is something genuinely radical about turning the ocean's most infamous killer into something a fish could safely eat.
