Yesterday, Thursday January 12, local residents Brittany Nicole Oneal and her attorney appeared before city council seeking approval of a liquor license for her new business Cru Lounge located at 1639 Victory Drive. They were denied on a 5 to 4 vote.
Oneal has been in front of council since multiple times including July 2022 when the matter was continued to December, and then yesterday she appeared again believing she had “checked all the boxes”.
Still she was denied. She has expensed $130,000 to get before council.
The reason for the denial? Third District Alderwoman Linda Wilder Bryan.
The same Linda Wilder Bryan who last year summoned 3 police officers to Linda’s Seafood on Wheaton Street to strong arm the owner into refunding her for some to go food she had picked up the day before and decided 36 hours later - she didn’t like it.
Let’s set the record straight: Since July last year Oneal has been working faithfully with city staff to meet all the criteria for an approval of the liquor license. She satisfied parking and development, planning, zoning, and secured from city manager Jay Melder his recommendation to council to approve the license.
How fair is it for anyone, who meets and exceeds, all the specified requirements for a new business license, checks all the bureaucratic boxes, secures approval from the city manager - only to be canceled by her own Alderwoman? Crazy.
Unfortunately Ms. Oneal is a victim of petty politics. Bryan’s only explanation was 4 letters she received from doubtful residents of the third district. Did staff look into the letters to assess their veracity? No. Did anyone look into whether or not there is some background or connection between Linda Bryan and the letter writers? I doubt it. Since Linda Bryan is part of the council majority, Estella Shabazz, Nick Palumbo, Dertic Leggett, and Curtis Purtee all blindly voted down the application because they trusted Linda’s position. No independent thinkers there.
Question: So if the applicant had gotten “5” letters in support of the license she would have been approved?
Mayor Johnson actually said, “Let me be clear, it's a race to get to five.” Indeed Mayor Johnson, indeed.
Petulance, anger, and pettiness now determine policy within the majority on council? Remember in November folks.
