The Savannah Coastal Empire Section of the Society of Women Engineers provides awareness of science, technology, engineering, and math career fields for young people. Our members speak at local schools providing professional industry insight into various engineering careers. We have organized, funded, and directed our annual outreach event Girls Engineer It
Day, with over 350 girls in attendance a
nd over 80 parents and educators. The Section also provides Professional Development activities for its members. Through tours, speakers, and workshops, the members learn leadership skills and management techniques that are then used in area industries. This is only part of the support offered for women to achieve their potential in their chosen careers. Interaction with the Georgia Southern University and Embry Riddle Sections allows our professional members to mentor and advise collegiate student members. Over the next 20 years, the nation will retire 50% of its current engineering work force. We need to recruit and educate the next generation of engineers and scientists now. Let’s instill in our young people the desire and the need to create a better world to live in for tomorrow. In the Coastal Empire, women make up over 50% of the population. We must engage and equip our young people with the understanding that science and engineering careers are as glamorous, exciting and financially rewarding as other careers choices.
