Where is your place? 🤔

On the coast, it could be the beach you visit on the weekend, the marsh where you spend summer afternoons, the dock where you learned to fish, or simply the water you grew up around. It might be a place you’ve known your whole life, or maybe you’re still discovering it. 🌊

Where we grow up shapes who we become. When we take the time to appreciate our home, ask questions about it, understand how it works, and find ways to care for and give back to it, we begin to build a deeper sense of belonging. And sometimes, that connection can spark a passion that shapes a student’s future, a career, a purpose, or a lifelong commitment to the place that helped shape them.

At ECO Georgia, we believe one of the most powerful ways to build that connection is to help students experience their place firsthand. Our students don’t just learn about Georgia’s coast, they test water quality, explore salt marshes, see sustainable aquaculture, learn from coastal professionals, and discover how the many pieces of this ecosystem fit together. ☀️

Because when you experience your home firsthand, you start to see yourself as part of its story. 📖

And when students begin to see the Georgia coast as their place, they can begin to see themselves as part of its future. 💛

Thank you to all of our coastal partners that help us see the power of place, we couldn’t do it without you!

Grad students: we have a new state fellowship opportunity! 🦪

Applications are now open for the Oyster Outreach Fellowship, a unique opportunity to lead coastal conservation, education, and community engagement along the Georgia coast. Led by ECO in partnership with The Nature Conservancy and our UGA Shellfish Research Lab and Oyster Hatchery, this fellow will play a key role in advancing the Georgia Oyster Resiliency Initiative.

The primary focus of this role is education and outreach, connecting with K through 12 students to highlight the many job opportunities on our working waterfronts through hands-on exposure to oyster fisheries and restoration work. Beyond the classroom, this fellow will drive community engagement throughout the coastal Georgia region by working closely with potential growers, consumers, and the seafood industry, including local restaurants, to ensure that scientific knowledge translates into sustainable growth and healthy coastal ecosystems.

If you are passionate about marine science, environmental education, and community-driven impact, we invite you to apply for this position by August 16, 2026. You can learn more about the Oyster Outreach Fellowship and submit your application at https://bit.ly/4ynreVP
