Can history unite us?

At our 2026 Trustees Gala, more than 425 leaders from across Georgia gathered to honor the 2026 Georgia Trustees and celebrate the values that have shaped our nation for nearly 250 years.

In a recent The Atlanta Journal-Constitution op-ed, GHS Director of Public Relations and Communications Keith Strigaro reflects on the evening and what it reveals about history's power to bring people together, foster civic understanding, and remind us of our shared ideals.

As America prepares to commemorate its 250th anniversary, read why those ideals remain as important as ever: www.ajc.com/opinion/2026/06/america-at-250-georgians-put-aside-political-differences-for-one-night/

Delta Airlines has been "ready when you are" since passenger service to Atlanta began on this day in 1930. Delta grew from a crop-dusting company based in the Mississippi River delta to become one of Georgia’s most famous corporate residents. Collett Woolman bought the company in 1928 and renamed it Delta Air Service, with passenger service between Dallas and Jackson, Mississippi. In 1930, Delta expanded passenger service east to Atlanta and west to Fort Worth. In 1941, Delta established corporate headquarters in Atlanta and continued to grow under Woolman’s leadership through a series of mergers with other airlines that expanded routes across the U.S. and Europe. The company officially became Delta Air Lines in 1945 and played a crucial role in the rise of post-war Atlanta as an international city and commercial powerhouse. Almost 250 years ago, a new nation was born. Georgia was there, and the Georgia Historical Society has spent nearly two centuries collecting and sharing the stories that define our shared past.

As the United States marks this extraordinary milestone, GHS invites you to explore Georgia's role in the founding of the nation. From the three Georgians who signed the Declaration of Independence to the battles fought on Georgia soil, our story is America's story.

The orange apron says it all.

Founded in Atlanta in 1979 by Arthur Blank and Bernie Marcus, Home Depot changed the way Americans do home improvement. From two original stores to over 2,200 locations today, the company is a testament to Georgia-born entrepreneurship.

This original Home Depot apron, worn by co-founder Bernie Marcus, has become an enduring symbol of customer service, hands-on leadership, and business success.

For generations, Frank T. Nixon (1895-1996) and Solomon Nixon, Sr. (1928-1993) were entrepreneurs, community leaders, and advocates who helped shape life in Tift County.

During segregation and the Jim Crow era, the father and son provided essential services—including funerals, ambulance transportation, groceries, and accommodations—to Black communities across the region while also supporting participants in the Civil Rights Movement.

Their legacy will be commemorated with a new Georgia Historical Marker in Tifton. The public dedication will take place on Sunday, June 14, at 2:00 p.m. at Frank and Solomon Nixon Funeral Home. We hope you will join us!

A new historical marker in Moreland will recognize the lives of Denna Strickland and Estella Strickland (d.1932), members of a successful African-American farming family whose story reflects the broader history of racial violence, intimidation, and unprosecuted injustice during the Jim Crow era.

Join us this Saturday, June 13, at 2:00 p.m. at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery for the dedication. The event is free and open to the public!

Construction on the Mediterranean-style Hardman house shown here, designed by Leroy Collier Hart, began in 1919 and was completed in 1921. A physician, businessman, manufacturer, and farmer, Lamartine Griffin Hardman served in the Georgia house and senate before becoming governor in 1927. In the state legislature, Hardman sponsored legislation that created the State Board of Health and the State College of Agriculture, and supported statewide prohibition measures. As governor, Hardman laid the groundwork for comprehensive state government reorganization. Start exploring Georgia’s historical markers at https://historicalmarkers.georgiahistory.com/.
