Remember to recycle items from your bathroom, too. Here are a couple of tips to help you recycle right:
· Recycle items like empty shampoo bottles, toilet paper tubes, cardboard cartons/packaging from toothpaste and other items, and mouthwash containers.
· Place a recycling container in your bathroom.
· Don’t place tissues, medicine, toothbrushes, toothpaste or dental floss containers, pumps from bottles, or razors in with recyclables.
· Check to see if empty disinfecting wipes containers and toothpaste tubes are recyclable in your community. Some communities even recycle your old toilet!
· Check locally for department stores and hair salons that have collection programs to recycle makeup and hair products.
Have questions about what bathroom items are recyclable? Let us know.

Don’t place used motor oil in with recycling or garbage. Oil can mix with other chemicals in the garbage creating a hazard. Don’t pour oil down a storm drain or on the ground. Just one quart of oil can contaminate up to 250,000 gallons of water.

Take used oil to a drop-off site for recycling. Check with your local automotive store as many stores in Georgia offer free recycling of used oil and filters!

Did you know that both the bottle and the cap are recyclable? Place the cap back on your bottle before recycling. Keeping the cap on helps ensure it is also recycled. Loose caps are too small and lightweight and could potentially become litter or contamination in the sorting process.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Just a reminder to not place balloons, shiny wrapping paper, food, vases, and candy wrappers in with your recyclables. Compost the wilted flowers and food scraps. Recycle your cards, wine bottles, and cardboard boxes. Reuse vases and gift bags.

This month on KSB socials we will be featuring some of Savannah’s prominent green businesses, volunteer organizations and members of our community who are making a difference.

Tybee Clean Beach Volunteers or you may know them by FIGHT DIRTY TYBEE

Tybee Clean Beach Volunteers, also known as Fight Dirty Tybee, organizes and hosts beach (and marsh) clean ups all year long. We use 100% recycled buckets and ergonomic hand-held grabbers to pick up litter, producing no trash in the process. At the end of each clean up, we sort (and sometimes count) the trash by type and attempt to reuse or recycle as much as possible. Fun fact - we use our own recycling machines to convert beach trash into durable household products to keep those materials out of the landfill or ocean. We also manage the Hard-to-Recycle Center and the Turtle-Friendly Restaurant program on Tybee to encourage island-wide recycling and reduction of single-use plastics.

This is our 10th year, as we were started in late 2015, and have completed 509 hosted beach and marsh clean up events involving over 17,000 volunteers.

Our beach sweeps are open to everyone, and don’t require pre-registration. Check us out at www.tybeecleanbeach.org, Tybee Clean Beach on Instagram, and Fight Dirty Tybee on Facebook.

Notice litter in your neighborhood on recycling day? Small items like batteries can fall out of the bin or cart when emptied into the recycling truck. Improperly disposing of batteries can also lead to fires. Prevent litter and reduce risks to workers by recycling right.

Meet Katie Hubbard and learn more about Lite Foot.

Lite Foot has two separate arms.
1. Lite Foot Company is a for-profit sustainable home goods and refillery store. People can bring their own containers or use ours and fill and refill there everyday items. From Handsoap, dish soap and laundry detergent to more niche personal care items such as hair gel, sun screen, bug spray and even deodorant. We also have other sustainable home goods in the store that help to replace commonly used single-use or plastic items such as reusable sponges, bamboo toothbrushes etc. We even have a section of all upcycled things such as coats made from sleeping bags, bags made from billboard vinyl and lamps made from cardboard. We are located in the Starland Disctrict at 2400 Bull St Suite. You can check us out there or online at www.litefootcompany.comor  on IG.

2. Lite Foot Environmental Foundation, on the other hand, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was established as an extension of the Company’s mission to make a larger impact in the community through education, advocacy, and environmental programs. We are in our first year of running the non-profit and are excired to see what 2025 has to offer after fundraising and grant writing all of 2024.

IN 2025 we will host the city’s Earth Day Festival (for the 2nd year in a row) as well as launch our two first programs.  Lite Foot Environmental Foundation is tackling plastic waste in Savannah through two innovative initiatives: the Closed-Loop Aluminum Bottle Program and the Plastic Upcycling Initiative. Simultaneously, the Plastic Upcycling Initiative addresses the city’s lack of public recycling infrastructure by transforming plastic waste into durable, long-lasting products like public recycling bins, park benches, and household items. Through education, collaboration, and action, these programs work together to reduce waste, promote sustainability, and inspire a greener future for Savannah.
