🌎Student Spotlight: From the Salt Flats to Sustainability: Meet Isabella Velasquez!

Isabella Velasquez is class of 2025-2026 GRSP scholar representing Bolivia at Georgia Gwinnett College. Pursuing a degree in Environmental Science, Isabella’s academic journey is fueled by a deep-seated passion for sustainability and the natural wonders of her homeland. She often shares the marvels of Bolivia with her new community, such as the breathtaking Salar de Uyuni, explaining how the world’s largest salt flat transforms into a massive, shimmering mirror during the rainy season. This connection to the earth was forged during her years with the Grupo Scout Santa Ana, where the values of leadership and environmental stewardship first inspired her to protect our global ecosystem. As a representative of the Georgia Rotary Student Program, Isabella goes far beyond her studies to foster "Peace Through Understanding" by bridging the gap between South American traditions and Georgia life. Whether she is educating others on the unique geography of the Andes or sharing the service-oriented values she learned as a scout, she serves as a vital link in our international community.

We extend our deepest thanks to the Rotary Club of Gwinnett County for sponsoring Isabella and providing her with this platform to grow as a global leader. Her presence on campus is a testament to the power of cross-cultural exchange and the bright future of environmental advocacy.

Student Spotlight: Timeless Connections: Meet Asgar Nielsen of Denmark!

Asgar Nielsen is a scholar from Denmark representing the Georgia Rotary Student Program Class of 2025-2026. Asgar is currently studying at Columbus State University (CSU), where he has quickly become a familiar face on campus. One of his favorite landmarks is the historic Clock Tower, a monument built with original bricks from the university’s first buildings to honor CSU’s first president, Thomas Y. Whitley. While local superstition suggests that walking under the tower might lead to failing final exams, Asgar laughs it off with classic Danish confidence—he’s more focused on the history than the haunts! When he isn’t admiring the campus architecture, you can find Asgar at his absolute favorite spot: the gym. A dedicated fitness enthusiast, he makes it a point to visit the sauna every single day, even when the Georgia heat climbs to 100°F outside. Living in the vibrant downtown Columbus area, Asgar loves the convenience of having his dorms just steps away from great places to hang out with friends and grab a bite to eat. Whether he’s hitting a new personal record in the weight room or enjoying the local downtown scene, Asgar is truly making the most of his American experience.

We want to give a huge thank you to the Rotary Club of Columbus for their generous sponsorship of Asgar. Your support has provided him with the opportunity to build lifelong friendships and experience the best of Georgia’s hospitality. We are so proud to have such a motivated and adventurous student representing GRSP at Columbus State University!

🥇Student Spotlight: Racing Toward Peace: Meet Ryheem Mighten of Jamaica!

Ryheem Mighten is a Class of 2025-2026 Georgia Rotary Student Program scholar from Jamaica who is making history at LaGrange College. This year, Ryheem had the unique opportunity to be part of the college’s first-ever track and field program, and he has already proven to be a cornerstone of the team’s success. His incredible speed and dedication led him to be named the voted the Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) Rookie of the Year after an incredible season which included winning the men's 200-meter and 400-meter dash events at the CCS Championships the weekend prior! Whether he is sprinting toward a new personal record or engaging with his peers on campus, Ryheem’s energetic spirit and Caribbean warmth are helping to build a more connected and vibrant community in LaGrange.

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the LaGrange Rotary Club for their sponsorship of Ryheem this year. Your support has given this talented student-athlete the platform to excel both on the track and in the classroom, fostering the cross-cultural understanding that is at the heart of the GRSP mission. 🌎Alumni Spotlight: Kati Orru: From GRSP Scholar to Global Leader in Resilience

GRSP alumna Kati (Kangur) Orru recently returned to Oglethorpe University for a guest lecture on disaster preparedness and social resilience. A 2003-2004 GRSP student at Oglethorpe sponsored by the Rotary Club of Buckhead , Kati (Kangur) shared her expertise on how trust and inclusive governance can protect vulnerable populations during global crises. Her continued international impact was recently recognized with the 2026 Estonian National Research Award, an honor she shared with fellow GRSP alumnus Sten Hansson (1999, Shorter College, Rotary Clubs of Rome, Rome-Seven Hills and Summerville-Trion).

Throughout her stay, Kati emphasized that her time with GRSP was a defining chapter of her life. She shared heartfelt gratitude for the enduring support of her host families—Aadu and Kristi Allpere and the Bill Perkins family—noting that the warm encouragement she received in Georgia remains a cherished memory. Today, as Kati leads vital international research collaborations, she continues to serve as a brilliant ambassador for the GRSP mission, proving that the bonds of international exchange truly do foster a lifetime of global understanding. It was such a pleasure to hear from Ximena the Georgia Rotary Student Program (GRSP) student attending Georgia Southern (in Savannah) from Paraguay. Ximena told the story of meeting members of our club during our service project in Paraquay. That connection planted the seed for her to apply to GRSP. She told of the thrill of learning that she had been accepted. She and her parents shared an American-style university "move-in" experience to start her year in her dorm. She is very focused on taking in the culture of the US and the state of Georgia. She has clearly made life-long friendships and developed her perspective of the world. It is exciting for us to see the power of Rotary connections. Her best advice “Never pass up a piece of pecan pie!” 😉
