In 1735 on this day in Georgia history, Button Gwinnett was born in Gloucester, England.
He was appointed as a member of the continental congress representing Georgia. He voted for independence in July, signed the Declaration of Independence in August (along with other Georgians George Walton and Lyman Hall).
Gwinnett died on May 19, 1777 near Savannah, Georgia from injuries sustained from a dual with Lachlan McIntosh, another prominent Georgian.
Gwinnett's signature is one of the rarest and most valuable among the signers of the Declaration of Independence due to his early demise.

On this day in Georgia History:
1974 Atlanta Brave Hank Aaron hit home run number 714 on opening day against Cincinnati at Riverfront Stadium, tying him with Babe Ruth for most career home runs. On his first at-bat of the 1974 season, with the count of 3 balls and 1 strike, Aaron hit a 3-run homer (though the Reds went on to defeat the Braves 7-6 in 11 innings).
Concerned that Aaron might break Ruth's record in Cincinnati rather than in Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, the Braves considered benching Aaron for the remainder of the series. However baseball commissioner Bowie Kuhn ordered that Aaron had to play in at least two of the 3 remaining games in Cincinnati.

This day in Savannah History:
1870 After a two-day stay in Augusta, Robert E. Lee and his daughter arrived in Savannah to be greeted by thundering ovations. The ailing 63-year-old hero had come to Savannah for a brief vacation in hopes of restoring his declining health.
Arriving at the home of his host, Gen. Alexander Lawton, Lee was greeted with cheering crowds and two brass bands that played such songs as "Dixie," "Hail to the Chief," and "The Bonnie Blue Flag" late into the night. Unable to sleep with all the celebration outside, Lee finally had to depart out the back door and spend the night at the home of Andrew Low.

The famous epitaph of Benjamin Franklin:

The body of
B. Franklin, Printer
(Like the cover of an old book
Its contents torn out
And stripped of its Lettering and Guilding)
Lies here, Food for the Worms.
But the Work shall not be wholly lost;
For it will, (as he believed) appear once more,
In a new and more perfect Edition,
Corrected and Amended
By the Author.
