Savannah Council on World Affairs

Savannah Council on World Affairs Memberships available; guests welcome for $10. They come from both the U.S. and around the world. These nonpartisan programs have been offered since 1984.

The mission of the Savannah Council on World Affairs (SCWA) is to foster individual awareness of, broaden community interest in, and promote the study of international affairs. The Council provides a forum for discussion of international affairs by hosting monthly programs from September through May at the Coastal Georgia Center in Savannah. Speakers are recognized authorities including current an

d former government officials, diplomats, educators, journalists, and members of non-governmental organizations. MEMBERSHIPS: An annual membership allows free attendance at speaker events and access to video of the talk. $50, single; $75 for couple. Individual events are $10 for guests. SCHOLARSHIPS: Each year the Council provides a stipend to college undergraduates to assist in their decision to study abroad. Recipients should have already been selected for a study abroad program, have a good academic record, and have financial need. Each stipend recipient gives a brief report on their program at the beginning of one of our Fall programs. GREAT DECISIONS: Discussions on various world affairs challenges are sponsored in fall and spring and regularly scheduled through the group. The Council is a non-partisan, tax-exempt organization and neither participates in political campaigns nor attempts to influence legislation. It is affiliated with, and pays dues to, the World Affairs Councils of America (WACA), located in Washington, D.C. This "parent" organization, founded in 1918, has 83 member councils with approximately 80,000 members, and is considered the premier organization providing information to the citizens of our country on international affairs. It organizes an annual National Conference focused on a subject or region of current interest, which many members of the Council choose to attend.

On May 15, board members from the Savannah Council on World Affairs (SCWA) were pleased to visit students and faculty at the Benedictine Military School for a career panel discussion. Ambassador Larry Silverman, COL (Retired) Pete Hoffman, and Joyce Wallace, CIA, Retired, each provided an overview of their respective careers and responded to questions from the students pertaining to their work to protect US national security and further US foreign policy objectives.

Following the panel discussion, the students graciously invited the panel members to lunch in the dining hall and to tour the school campus.

SCWA is dedicated to the learning and education of high school and university students through its monthly speaker series, engagement with high school Model United Nations students, and support to university study abroad programs.
