It's about that time -- to commemorate Juneteenth. This event, a partnership between the Savannah Yamacraw Branch of ASALH and The Learning Center at Senior Citizens Inc., Savannah, GA, takes place at The Historic Second African Baptist Church. The church was a key gathering place where Union officials met with Black ministers and other African Americans during the closing months of the Civil War. Tours of the church will begin immediately after the program (corrected time).

Savannah Yamacraw ASALH branch member, retired educator Dr. Patricia Patterson, presented a conceptual approach to establishing ASALH Freedom School curricula in Savannah. Dr. Patterson wove African American history and culture throughout her presentation to the community-based audience. A passionate world traveler, especially on the continent of Africa, she brought artifacts from her travels as well as many children's books from her personal library to enlighten the audience about how to infuse Freedom School strategies in community educational programs.

Our local ASALH branch was one of the partners for a "Day of Cultural Legacy" in Savannah at the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum. We had a great presentation and conversation about the necessity of preserving Black history through storytelling. Thanks to Color Of Change for asking our ASALH branch to join in this national project. We invited actress/professor/museum program director, Dr. Tonea Stewart of Montgomery, AL, to share her talent, wisdom and inspiration. We were proud to present Dr. Stewart with a commissioned painting by local artist Panhandle Slim.
