This weekend, several volunteers with Renegade CAN devoted significant time and materials to help a member of our community improve outdoor shelter conditions for his two dogs.
Renegade, in partnership with Chatham County Animal Services, decided it was overall in the dogs’ best interests to work with the owner to help him get compliant with county outdoor shelter requirements. In turn, this would improve significantly the living conditions for the dogs. It was clear to Renegade and CCAS that the owner loved his dogs and just needed help. And that at this point he was not in a position to move the dogs inside.
While we strongly advocate for owned dogs be kept indoors, we also know there are cases around the community where this may not be what the owner is able or willing to do, at least not currently. Our plan is to meet them where they are. Because the alternative here was that CCAS might be forced to seize the dogs and bring to the shelter. The shelter is often full and tying up kennels can put these lives dogs and other dogs at risk for euthanasia. Obviously not a solution that Renegade wants to pursue, especially if the case does not involve cruelty or extreme neglect, which we agree warrant more extreme measures such as citations and possible seizure by CCAS. But in cases where owners are willing and trying to do the right thing to be compliant but just need some help, CCAS generally supports working with these members. So Renegade decided to help.
Both dogs had been living in a large pen, but they were not in a large enough space for two dogs. Also the pen did not provide enough protection from the elements, there was a dirt floor, a roof tarp and one small doghouse.
Renegade organized an over a dozen volunteers who spent the day getting the outdoor shelter above and beyond ordinance requirements. We showed up with refurbished materials, tools, two air conditioned doghouses, and a can do attitude. The owner helped a lot with the work as well and by the end of the day the yard was equipped with two large pens, one for each dog. Each pen was equipped with a wood base, slanted framed covered roof, and an air conditioned dog house. The owner was ecstatic and very appreciative of the results.
It was a lot of hard work but with great teamwork the mission was accomplished. And perfect timing, as it started storming heavy in the evening about an hour after we finished. The dogs now were able to stay dry and clean through the storm. Both dogs are also being fixed through the community spay and neuter program.
A successful and very good day. Go team Renegade! Last photo is a before image.
Renegade CAN is an initiative within Renegade Paws Rescue focused on community outreach, essentially providing resources and assistance as available to those who need help keeping and caring for their pets. This may involve help with pet food, pet supplies, spay/neuter, and adequate shelter for their pets.
